1) A 220 V.

1500 rpm, 10 A separately excited de motor is fed from a single-phase fully-


controlled rectifier with an ac source voltage of 230 V. 50 Hz. Ra = 2 Ω. Conduction
can be assumed to be continuous. Calculate firing angles for
(i) half the rated motor torque and 500 rpm.
(ii) rated motor torque and (-1000) rpm.

2) A 220 V. 1200 rpm, 15 A separately excited motor has armature resistance and
inductance of 1.8 Ω and 32 mH respectively. This motor is controlled by a single-
phase fully-controlled rectifier with an ac source voltage of 230 V, 50 Hz. Identify the
modes and calculate developed torques for:
i) α = 60° and speed = 450 rpm
ii) α = 60° and speed = 1500 rpm

3) A 230 V, 650 rpm, 100 A separately excited dc motor has armature resistance and
inductance of 0.08 Ω and 8 mH respectively. Motor is controlled by a single-phase
half-controlled rectifier with source voltage of 230 V, 50 Hz. Identify the modes and
calculate speeds for
i) α = 60° and torque = 1000 N-m
ii) α = 120° and torque = 1000 N-m.

4) A 220 V, 750 rpm, 200 A separately excited motor has armature and field resistances
of 0.05 and 20 Ω respectively. Load torque is given by the expression TL=500-0.2*N
N-m, where N is the speed in rpm. Speeds below rated value are obtained by armature
voltage control with full field and speeds above rated are obtained by field control at
rated armature voltage.
Armature is fed from a three-phase fully controlled rectifier with ac source voltage
(line) of 170 V, 50 Hz and the field is fed from a half-controlled single-phase rectifier
with a single-phase source voltage of 250 V, 50 Hz. Drive operates under continuous
conduction. Calculate firing angles for speeds:
i) 600 rpm
ii) 1200 rpm

5) A 220 V, 24 A. 100 rpm, separately excited de motor has an armature resistance of 2


Ω. Motor is controlled by a chopper with frequency of 500 Hz and source voltage of
230 V. Calculate the duty ratio for 1.2 times rated torque and 500 rpm.

6) A 230 V separately excited dc motor takes 50 A at a speed of 800 rpm. It has


armature resistance of 0.4 Ω. This motor is controlled by a chopper with an input
voltage of 230 V and frequency of 500 Hz. Assuming continuous conduction
throughout, calculate the plot speed-torque characteristics for:
i) motoring operation at duty ratios of 0.3 and 0.6.
ii) regenerative braking operation at duty ratios of 0.7 and 0.4.
7) A 230 V. 1200 rpm, 15 A separately excited motor has an armature resistance of 1.2
Ω. Motor is operated under dynamic braking with chopper control. Braking resistance
has a value of 20 Ω.
i) Calculate duty ratio of chopper for motor speed of 1000 rpm and braking
torque equal to 1.5 times rated motor torque.
ii) What will be the motor speed for duty ratio of 0.5 and motor torque equal to
its rated torque?

8) .A separately excited dc motor is fed from a 3-phase,6 pulse fully controlled bridge
converter. The motor develops its full load torque at a rated speed of 1800 rpm taking a
current of 60A from a 400V supply. Determine the rms value of supply voltage if the motor
runs at its rated conditions for α=0. What is the range of firing angles for a speed control of
1800 to 900 rpm. The armature resistance is 0.5Ω. The supply and thyristors are ideal.

9). A 600V dc series motor has a combined armature and field resistances of 0.16Ω. The
motor draws an armature current of 210A while running at a speed of 600 rpm. The motor
drives a load having a torque speed characteristic

Determine the constant A while running at a speed of 600 rpm.
This motor is to be controlled by a 3-phase fully controlled bridge converter. Determine
the input voltage of the converter if the speed of 600 rpm is required at α=0. Assume a linear
magnetization characteristic, determine the range of firing angles for a speed control range
600-0 rpm.

10). A 3-phase dual converter feeds a 500V, 60A dc motor with separate excitation. The
armature resistance is 1.5Ω. The converter is fed from a 420V, 50Hz supply. Assuming a
voltage drop of 20V in the converter determine the firing angle and back emf for
a). motoring operation at full load current with motor terminal voltage of 450V.
b). regeneration operation at full load current with terminal voltage of 450V.
c). the motor is plugged at a terminal voltage of 400V with a current limiting resistor of 5Ω.

11). A dc chopper feeds a dc series motor. The supply voltage to the chopper is 500V. The
total current is found to vary between two current limits having a difference of 15A. The time
ratio of the chopper is 0.6 and its pulse frequency 80cycles/s. Determine the armature
inductance of the motor.
