Why Gauges

• Gauges are the inspection device to check whether


the dimensions of part lies within limits or not
• They are used to check conformity of dimension and
form with predefined values.
• Examples are Try square, radius gauge, filler gauge.
• The resultant attribute after checking the
component with gauge is either “yes” or “Not”
• Gauges can not tell variation , but only conformity
or non conformity
Why Gauges

• Gauges are quiet useful in mass production.


• They save time while maintaining accuracy of
inspection.
• Gauges can be of variety depending upon
application and need.

Gauges in general

• Gauges are used to inspect the components.


• mostly gauges inspect the component with respect
to the limit of the size.
• they provide a attribute whether to accept a
component or not
• or the component is good or bed
• in other words parts can be checked whether the
dimension lies within the Limit or not.
• Gauges are best suited for mass production.
Classification of gauges

(1) According to their type:


• Standard gauges
• Limit gauges
(2)According to the purposes:
• Workshop gauge
• Inspection gauge
• Reference or master gauge
Classification of gauges

(3)According to the form of the tested surface


• Plug gauge
• Snap, Gap, or Ring gauge
(4)According to their design
• Single limit and double limit gauges
• Single-ended and double-ended gauges
• Fixed and adjustable gauges.
Desirable properties of gauge material

• Hardness (to resist wear)


• Corrosion resistance
• Stability (through proper heat treatment)
• Easy to machine
• low coefficient of thermal expansion
• Auxiliary part must be made of material having low
thermal conductivity.
• Strength.
