Renewable Energy Technologies (3-0-0) UOEEE603

Prerequisites:
1. Basic Electrical Engineering
2. Basic Electronics Engineering

Course Outcomes
At the end of this course, the students will able to,
1. Analyze the energy scenario and the consequent growth of the power generation from
renewable energy sources.
2. Explain the basic physics of wind and solar power generation.
3. Synthesize the power electronic interfaces for wind and solar generation.
4. Resolve the issues related to the grid-integration of solar and wind energy systems.

Module 1: (10 Hours)


Environmental consequences of fossil fuel use, Importance of renewable sources of energy, Sustainable
Design and development, Types of RE sources, Limitations of RE sources, Present Indian and international
energy scenario of conventional and RE sources.
Wind Generator Topologies: Wind power statistics of India and world, Wind physics; roll, yaw and
pitch; Betz limit, tip speed ratio, stall and pitch control, Wind speed statistics-probability distributions.
Review of modern Wind turbine technologies: HAWT, VAWT, fixed and variable speed Wind
turbines
Module 2: (10 Hours)
Solar Enegry Basics- extra-terrestrial and terrestrial radiation, solar radiation measuring instruments,
Solar Geometry concepts

Solar Photovoltaic and Solar Thermal Power Generation: Solar photovoltaic: Technologies-
Amorphous, monocrystalline, polycrystalline; V-I characteristics of a PV cell, PV module, array,
power electronic converters for solar systems, introduction to maximum power point tracking (MPPT)
algorithm – P&O, INC

Solar thermal technologies: flat plate collector, parabolic trough, central receivers, parabolic dish,
Fresnel, solar pond

Module 3: (10 Hours)


Biomass Power: Principles of biomass conversion, Combustion and fermentation, Anaerobic

digestion, Types of biogas digester, Wood gasifier, Pyrolysis, Applications, Biogas, Biodiesel

Brief idea on Fuel cells, Battery Storage Technology.
