In ∆ABC the total number of small triangles (n) = 7

Total triangles = 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7

Total triangles = 28

Hence, 28 is the correct answer.

The given figure:

If we observe the below figure carefully, we would see that if we count the number of triangles in ABC and
multiply it by three, then we would get the number of triangles in ABC, BHI, and CGI.

The number of triangles in ABC:

The number of triangles in ABC = ACD, ADE, AEF, ABF, ACE, ADF, AEB, ACF, ADB, ABC

Thus, there are 10 triangles in ABC.

Implies, there are 30 triangles in ABC, HIB, and CGI
Also, there are two more triangles i.e. BCI, and AGH.

Total triangles = 30 + 2

Total triangles = 32

Hence, there are "32" triangles in the figure.

Q. Find number of triangles.

1. 45
2. 50

4. 48
Answer:
Solution:

 Using the vertical line AD, AE and AF,

Number of triangles = 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 10

 Using horizontal lines BC, PQ, MN, ST and HG,

 Total no. of triangles = 10 * total number of horizontal lines = 10*5 = 50

Answer: 3

Solution:

Using smaller triangle PQR, there is total 4 triangles.

Then after using ABC, there is total 4 triangles

4) 15

Answer: 1

Solution:

We consider the large triangle as 1

Now after adding a triangle inside it, we will get other 4 more triangles.

Now we draw three lines on smaller triangle from the vertices of the larger triangle, we get other 6 triangles (2
triangles on each side of smaller triangle) as follows.

Count the number of triangles in the given figure?

1. 26
2. 48
3. 50
4. 38
Answer: 2
Solution:
Total triangles = n (n + 2) (2n + 1) 8

Here, n = Number of diagonally arranged small triangles.

In given figure n = 5

Then,

Total triangles = 5 (5 + 2) (2 5 + 1) 8

Total triangles = (5 × 7 × 11) ÷ 8 = 385 ÷ 8 = 48 (So consider integer only)

Total triangles = 48

Hence, 48 is the correct answer.

4) 26

Answer: 2

Solution:

If figure is symmetric, means no. of rows is equal to no. of columns. Then simply we numbered boxes as 1, 2,
3, 4 as rows and columns as well,

Then total no. of squares = 1^2 + 2^2 + 3^2 + 4^2 = 30

Total squares are 8.

Memory Tip

If figure is asymmetric, means no. of rows is not equal to no. of columns. Then simply we numbered
boxes as 1, 2, 3, 4… as rows and columns. Then we find the product of the last column box to last row
box, 6*4 = 24 and then implies this with one less value in rows and columns as well.

i.e. 3 × 2 = 6

2×1=2

Answer: 4

Solution:

If figure is asymmetric, means no. of rows is not equal to no. of columns. Then simply we numbered boxes as
1, 2, 3, 4… as rows and columns. Then we find

product of the last column box to last row box, 6*4 = 24 and then implies this with one less value in rows and
columns as well.

6*4 = 24

5*3 = 15

4*2 = 08

3*1 = 03

We do this till we don’t get the either value of row or column as 1

Total no. of squares = 24 + 15 + 08 + 03 = 50

Find number of rectangles.

1) 100

2) 195

3) 225

4) 120

Answer: 3

Solution:

If figure is symmetric, means no. of rows is equal to no. of columns.

If figure is asymmetric, means no. of rows is not equal to no. of columns. Then simply we numbered boxes as
1, 2, 3, 4… as rows and columns. Then we find

1^3 + 2^3 + 3^3 + 4^3 +…..

Here we have numbered boxes as 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.

So total no. of rectangles = 1^3 + 2^3 + 3^3 + 4^3 + 5^3 = 225

Note: All squares are counted as rectangles.

2) 80

3) 90

4) 95

Answer: 3

Solution :

If figure is asymmetric, means no. of rows is not equal to no. of columns. Then simply we numbered boxes as
1, 2, 3 as rows and 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, as columns.

Then we add row box numbers and column box numbers individually, then multiply the sum of those. After
adding row numbers we get, 1 + 2 + 3 = 6 and adding columns we get, 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 = 15

Then total no. of rectangles = 6*15 = 90

1) 17

2) 20

3) 18

4) 19

Correct answer: 4

Solution:

We numbered this figure boxes as 1, 2, 3, and 4 considering common row as 1, then we simply add them we
get, 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 10 from both the sides. And one rectangle counted twice so we subtract it. So total no. of
rectangles = 10 + 10 – 1 = 19.

Points to Remember
All squares are counted as rectangles

Total triangle = 10 × 1
Total triangle in triangle CDE = 10
Similarly,
Total triangle in triangle DGF = 3
In triangle, BCD

If,
Number of Row is not equals to Number of Column (R ≠ C).
Then,
Total Squares = R × C + (R – 1) (C – 1) + (R – 2) (C – 2) + - - - - - - - - - - - - + (R – n) (C – n)
Here, R = Number of Rows and C = Number of Column.
And,
If,
Number of Row equals to Number of Column (R = C).
Then,
Total squares = 12 + 22 + 32 + 42 + - - - - - - - - - - n2
Here, n = Total number of column.
In ABCD,

In given question,
Number of Row (R) = 6
Number of Column (C) = 2
Total squares = 6 × 2 + (6 – 1) (2 – 1) + (6 – 2) (2 – 2)
Total squares = 6 × 2 + 5 × 1 + 4 × 0
Total squares = 12 + 5 + 0
Total squares in ABCD = 17
In Square EFGH,

LOGICAL REASONING | Counting Figure PAGE 30

Download Testbook

Number of Row (R) = 2

Number of Column (C) = 2
Number of Row = Number of Column = 2
Then,
Total squares = 12 + 22
Total squares = 1 + 4
Total squares = 5
WE count one square in square ABCD so we have to subtract it from square EFGH
So,
Total squares in EFGH = 5 – 1
Total squares in EFGH = 4
In Square IJKL,
Number of Row (R) = 2
Number of Column (C) = 2
Number of Row = Number of Column = 2
Then,
Total squares = 12 + 22
Total squares = 1 + 4
Total squares = 5
WE count one square in square ABCD so we have to subtract it from square IJKL
So,

Total squares in IJKL = 5 – 1

Total squares in IJKL = 4
Now adding all the squares,
Total squares = Squares in ABCD + Squares in EFGH + Squares in IJKL
Total squares = 17 + 4 + 4
Hence, 25 is the correct answer.
