C. Presentation

At the end of the lesson, you are

expected to:

a. convert exponential
equations to logarithmic
equations and vice versa;
b. apply the laws of
logarithms to solve
logarithmic equations; and
c. relate exponential and
logarithmic functions to
real life.

From the previous lesson, you learned

about exponential equations and
functions. Exponential equations have
their corresponding logarithmic form
and vice versa. As we go on, we will
still be using exponential equation as
we tackle logarithmic equations.

D. Discussion

A logarithmic equation is an equation

that involves the logarithm of an
expression containing a variable.

Logarithmic equation is in the form:

𝑙𝑜𝑔𝑏 𝑎 = 𝑥

This is read as:

“log of a, base b is equal to x” or
“log, base b, of a is equal to x”.

Where b is the base.

Such that:

𝑎>0
𝑏>0
𝑏≠1

Let us have the examples below. What

do you think are the solutions for
these two equations starting from
number 1?

1. 4𝑥 = 16 x = 2 ma’am.

Excellent!

How did you get that answer? Write both sides of the equation with same
bases and equate their exponents in order to
solve the value of x ma’am.
Precisely!

2. 7𝑥 = 4

How about for number 2? Can you do No Ma’am, because it is not possible to make
the same with 7𝑥 = 4? Why? the bases the same.

Correct.

This is where logarithmic equation

should be applied.

Remember that the exponential

equation bx = a can be transformed
as log b a = x, therefore:
7𝑥 = 4 can be converted as log 7 4 = x
Then use the change of base
log 4
method x = log 7 ≈ .71.

There are two types of logarithm.

We have common logarithm and

natural logarithm.

Common logarithm has a fixed base of

10.

It’s in the form 𝑙𝑜𝑔10 𝑥 or 𝑙𝑜𝑔𝑥.

Meanwhile, natural logarithm has base

𝑒. Although 𝑒 looks like a variable, it
has a fixed value which is
2.718281828.

It is in the form ln 𝑥.

Write the Exponential equations to

Logarithmic equations or vice versa.

For the girls

1. 𝑏4 = 11
2. 3𝑥 = 10
3. 17𝑥 = 2
4. 2(𝑥+1) = 8
3
5. 𝑥 = √6
For the boys
6. √𝑥 = 2
7. 𝑙𝑜𝑔2 8 = 𝑦
8. 𝑙𝑜𝑔3 81 = 𝑦
1
9. 𝑙𝑜𝑔5 125 = 𝑦
1
10. 𝑙𝑜𝑔8 512 = 𝑦

Let’s check the answers.

1. 𝑏4 = 11

number 5?

Excellent!

6. √𝑥 = 2

√𝑥 as exponential number, right?
1
What is it going to be?
𝑥 2 ma’am.
Very good!
1
Now, what is the logarithmic form? 𝑙𝑜𝑔𝑥 2 = ma’am.
2

Excellent!

7. 𝑙𝑜𝑔2 8 = 𝑦

Remember that a logarithmic equation

can be converted into an exponential
equation.

So, if we rewrite this into its

exponential form, it will become:

2𝑦 = 8
Next, we have:

8. 𝑙𝑜𝑔3 81 = 𝑦

What is the exponential form of this 3𝑦 = 81 ma’am.

Precisely!

Next:

number 9?

Excellent!
1
10. 𝑙𝑜𝑔8 512 = 𝑦

Anyone who can give me the 1

exponential form of this one? 8𝑦 = 512 ma’am.

Correct.

Solve for x in the following equations:

1. 𝑙𝑜𝑔2 𝑥 = 5

First thing that we are going to do is to

transform this into its exponential
form.

Anyone who can give me its

exponential form? 25 = 𝑥 ma’am.

Excellent!

Now what is x? 32 ma’am.

Correct!

2. 𝑙𝑜𝑔4 𝑥 = 0

Anyone who can give me its

exponential form? 40 = 𝑥 ma’am

Correct.

Now, what is x? 1 ma’am.

Very good.
1
3. 𝑙𝑜𝑔𝑥 27 = −3
What is the exponential form? 1
𝑥 −3 = 27 ma’am.

Exactly!

Then, what is x?
3 ma’am.
Correct!

4. 𝑙𝑜𝑔𝑥 81 = 2

Anyone who can give me the

exponential form of number 4.
𝑥 2 = 81 ma’am.
Precisely!

Now what is x?
9 ma’am.

Excellent!

5. 𝑙𝑜𝑔2 𝑥 = −4

Anyone who can give me the

2−4 = 𝑥 ma’am.
exponential form.

Okay, very good.

What is x? 1
ma’am.
16

Excellent.

Solve logarithmic equations using

the laws of logarithm.

Let’s go ahead and solve logarithms

using the laws of logarithms.

There are 4 steps to solve logarithmic

equations using laws of logarithm.

Step 1: Group logarithmic terms

together on one side of the equation.
Step 2: Apply the correct laws of
logarithm.
Step 3: Convert the equation into an
exponential form then solve the value
of x.
Step 4: Check the solutions.

1. log 𝑥 + log 5 = 2

Since the logarithms are group

together on one side, we skip step 1
and proceed to step 2.

Step 2: Apply the correct laws of

logarithm.
What property or law of logarithm are
we going to apply? Product law ma’am.

Excellent!

Applying the product law, we can

rewrite the equation as:

log 5𝑥 = 2

Step 3: Convert the equation into an

exponential form them solve the value
of x.

What is the exponential form of 102 = 5𝑥 ma’am.

log 5𝑥 = 2 ?

Correct!

Simplifying further, we’ll get:

100 = 5𝑥

Where did I get 100? Since this is a

common logarithm then it is
understandable that the base is 10.
Thus, squaring 10 will result to 100.

Dividing both sides by 5, will give us:

𝑥 = 20

Step 4: Check the solutions.

log 𝑥 + log 5 = 2
log 20 + log 5 = 2
log(20 ∙ 5) = 2
log 100 = 2
102 = 100
100 = 100

Therefore, 20 is a solution for

log 𝑥 + log 5 = 2.

2. 𝑙𝑜𝑔3 27 + 𝑙𝑜𝑔3 3 = 𝑙𝑜𝑔3 (𝑥 + 1)

Step 2: Apply the correct laws of

logarithm.

First thing that we are going to do is to

either simplify each term on the left
separately or use product law.

Since we are after solving logarithms

using the laws or properties of
logarithm, let’s use product law, so
this will become:

𝑙𝑜𝑔3 (27 ∙ 3) = 𝑙𝑜𝑔3 (𝑥 + 1)

What is the product of 27 and 3? 81 ma’am.

Precisely!

Using base 3, what is the exponential

number for 81? 4 ma’am.

Excellent!

The equation will be:

𝑙𝑜𝑔3 34 = 𝑙𝑜𝑔3 (𝑥 + 1)

Applying the product law, we can

rewrite the equation as:

4𝑙𝑜𝑔3 3 = 𝑙𝑜𝑔3 (𝑥 + 1)

Applying the identity law, 𝑙𝑜𝑔3 3 will

be equal to 1. Then, the product of 1
and 4 is 4. So, the equation will
become:

4 = 𝑙𝑜𝑔3 (𝑥 + 1)

Step 3: Convert the equation into an

exponential form them solve the value
of x.

What is the exponential form of

4 = 𝑙𝑜𝑔3 (𝑥 + 1)? 34 = 𝑥 + 1 ma’am.

Exactly!

Now, what is x? 80 ma’am.

Excellent!

Step 4: Check the solutions.

𝑙𝑜𝑔3 27 + 𝑙𝑜𝑔3 3 = 𝑙𝑜𝑔3 (𝑥 + 1)

𝑙𝑜𝑔3 (27 ∙ 3) = 𝑙𝑜𝑔3 (80 + 1)
𝑙𝑜𝑔3 81 = 𝑙𝑜𝑔3 81

Therefore, 80 is the solution for

the equation 𝑙𝑜𝑔3 81 = 𝑙𝑜𝑔3 81.
1 5 1
3. 𝑙𝑜𝑔2 8 = 4 − 2 𝑙𝑜𝑔2 𝑥
4

Step 1: Group logarithmic terms

together on one side of the equation.

1 1 5
𝑙𝑜𝑔2 8 + 𝑙𝑜𝑔2 𝑥 =
4 2 4

Then we are going to make the

equation simpler. To do that, let’s get
rid of the fractions.

What number are we going to multiply 4 ma’am.

to get rid of the fraction?

Correct, very good.

Multiplying 4 to both sides the

equation will become:

1 1 5
4 ( 𝑙𝑜𝑔2 8 + 𝑙𝑜𝑔2 𝑥) = 4 ( )
4 2 4
𝑙𝑜𝑔2 8 + 2𝑙𝑜𝑔2 𝑥 = 5

Step 2: Apply the correct laws of

logarithm.

Since we can’t simplify 2𝑙𝑜𝑔2 𝑥, let’s

apply power law. The equation will
result to:

𝑙𝑜𝑔2 8 + 𝑙𝑜𝑔2 𝑥 2 = 5

What law are we going to apply next?

Product law ma’am.
Very good.

The equation will become:

𝑙𝑜𝑔2 8𝑥 2 = 5

Step 3: Convert the equation into an

exponential form them solve the value
of x.

What is the exponential form of

𝑙𝑜𝑔2 8𝑥 2 = 5? 25 = 8𝑥 2 ma’am.

Correct!

Simplifying further, we’ll get:

32 = 8𝑥 2

Dividing both sides by 8, the resulting

equation will be:

4 = 𝑥2

Now, what are the values of x?

±2 ma’am.
Very good.
Step 4: Check the solutions.

Since we have 2 solutions for x, let’s

evaluate the logarithmic equation
using the 2 values of x.

Using x=2:

1 5 1
𝑙𝑜𝑔2 8 = − 𝑙𝑜𝑔2 𝑥
4 4 2
1 5 1
𝑙𝑜𝑔2 8 = − 𝑙𝑜𝑔2 2
4 4 2

1 5 1
(3) = − (1)
4 4 2

3 3
=
4 4

Since they are equal, 2 is indeed a

solution for the logarithmic
1 5 1
equation 4
𝑙𝑜𝑔2 8 = 4 − 2 𝑙𝑜𝑔2 𝑥.

Using x=-2

1 5 1
𝑙𝑜𝑔2 8 = − 𝑙𝑜𝑔2 (−2)
4 4 2

Will this be equal?

No ma’am.

Very good. Remember that from

𝑙𝑜𝑔𝑏 𝑎 = 𝑥, 𝑎 must be greater than 0.

4. 𝑙𝑜𝑔3 (3𝑥 2 + 6𝑥 + 3) = 1

Step 3: Convert the equation into an

exponential form them solve the value
of x.

What is the exponential form of this 3 = 3𝑥 2 + 6𝑥 + 3 ma’am.

one?

Okay, very good.

Simplifying further, we will get:

3𝑥 2 + 6𝑥 = 0

What are the values of x? 0 and -2 ma’am.

Excellent!

Step 4: Check the solutions.

Let’s check whether the values of x
are solutions of the equation
𝑙𝑜𝑔3 (3𝑥 2 + 6𝑥 + 3) = 1

Using x=0:

𝑙𝑜𝑔3 [3(0)2 + 6(0) + 3] = 1

𝑙𝑜𝑔3 3 = 1
1=1
Therefore 0 is a solution for the
equation 𝑙𝑜𝑔3 (3𝑥 2 + 6𝑥 + 3) = 1.

Using x=-2:

𝑙𝑜𝑔3 [3(−2)2 + 6(−2) + 3] = 1

𝑙𝑜𝑔3 (12 − 12 + 3) = 1
𝑙𝑜𝑔3 3 = 1
1=1
Therefore, -2 is also a solution of the
equation 𝑙𝑜𝑔3 (3𝑥 2 + 6𝑥 + 3) = 1

1 1
5. 𝑙𝑜𝑔2 (2𝑥 2 − 2) − 𝑙𝑜𝑔2 (𝑥 + 2) = 𝑙𝑜𝑔4 64

Step 2: Apply the correct laws of

logarithm.

What 2 laws of logarithm are we Quotient and power law ma’am.

going to apply?

Okay very good.

What is the exponential number for 64 43 ma’am.

if the base is 4?

Very good.

Then, the equation will result to:

1
2𝑥 2 − 2
𝑙𝑜𝑔2 ( ) = 𝑙𝑜𝑔4 43
1
𝑥+2

Applying power law, we can simplify

the equation as:

1
2𝑥 2 − 2
𝑙𝑜𝑔2 ( ) = 3𝑙𝑜𝑔4 4
1
𝑥+2

Simplifying further, will result to:

1
2𝑥 2 − 2

Factoring out 2 from 2𝑥 2 − 2, will
result to:

1
𝑥+2

1
Since 𝑥 2 − 4 is a difference of 2
1 1
squares, what are the factors? (𝑥 + 2) (𝑥 − 2) ma’am.

Very good.

The equation will become:

1 1
2 (𝑥 + 2) (𝑥 − 2)
[ ]=8
1
𝑥+2

Simplifying further will result to:

1
2 (𝑥 − ) = 8

Distributing 2, it will result to:

2𝑥 − 1 = 8

From this, anyone who can give me 9

equation 𝑙𝑜𝑔2 (2𝑥 2 − 12) − 𝑙𝑜𝑔2 (𝑥 + 12) = 𝑙𝑜𝑔464

Logarithmic Equations in real-life

situations.

One of the most common applications

of logarithm is compound interest.

Recall that the equation for compound

interest is:

𝑟 𝑛𝑡
𝐹 = 𝑃 (1 + )
𝑛

If we are to solve for F when all the

other variables are given then, there
will be no exponent which is a
variable.

Now, if we are asked for the value of

P, then we have the equation:

𝐹
𝑃=
𝑟 𝑛𝑡
(1 + 𝑛)

So, if P is unknown then again, there

is no exponent which is a variable.

What about the formula for time (t)?

Notice that if you solve for t when all

the other variables are given, the
equation will contain a variable in the
exponent which is the unknown
variable t itself. This situation will
make it impossible to solve the value
of the variable t, unless the equation is
transformed into logarithmic equation.

Let’s see the details of the derivation

for t.
𝑟 𝑛𝑡
𝐹 = 𝑃 (1 + )
𝑛

Dividing both sides by P will result to:

𝑟 𝑛𝑡
𝐹 𝑃 (1 + 𝑛)
=
𝑃 𝑃
Simplifying further, we will get:

𝐹 𝑟 𝑛𝑡
= (1 + )
𝑃 𝑛
Since t is an exponent in the equation
above then let’s set the logarithm of
both sides, that will be:

𝐹 𝑟
ln ( ) = ln 𝑛𝑡 (1 + )
𝑃 𝑛

To solve for t, divide both sides by

𝑟
ln 𝑛 (1 + 𝑛) and will result to:

𝐹
ln (𝑃 )
𝑟 =𝑡
n ln (1 + 𝑛)

Therefore, the equation for t is,

𝐹
ln (𝑃 )
𝑡= 𝑟
n ln (1 + 𝑛)

The equations that are presented above

are all applications of exponential
equations. But if we’re dealing with
time, that is when we solve using
logarithm because it is easier to do it
that way.

Let’s go back to the 3 problem that I

presented earlier.
