Discribing the Situational drama:

The first part of the video is a conversation between a European businessman, a male translator, and a
Vietnamese female customer. Because the work finished earlier than planned, the businessman
suggested that the female customer and her team could spend a day sightseeing everywhere.

The businessman said, "Last year, we took our Vietnamese guests to the Greenwich area, located on the
Thames River, which is famous for its maritime museum and Greenwich Mean Time." The interpreter
narrated very smoothly until the phone rang from the next table. Because the translator was distracted
by the phone conversation, he made mistakes. In the conversation of the businessman above, the
interpreter reported a lack of information. He did not mention the maritime museum as the
businessman mentioned. But he only mentioned the Greenwich area and the Sun time. When the
female customer told the businessman about the maritime museum, the businessman was a bit
confused because he had mentioned it i before, and the female customer still repeated it. Next, the
interpreter was not focused, so he made mistakes in arranging the time and place for lunch The skit ends
here.

The following section of the video is advice from other professional interpreters on concentration and
memory during interpretation. If the interpreters do not concentrate and remember quickly, they will
not be able to convey the content that the speaker wants to convey. Besides, experts also advise that we
should practice more memory because we can not always take notes. The speaker will often speak very
quickly so the interpreter can not take notes in time. A good memory is needed to remember
immediately. There are many ways to practice to help it interpreters remember longer, such as watching
TV or radio programs, then listening and repeating what the person on that program said.

Concentration and memory are indispensable factors in the translation process. Interpreting requires the
translator to work with a lot of complex information and sometimes different languages, so extreme
concentration is necessary.

During the translation process, concentration is the key factor to clearly understand the source text and
convey the correct meaning in the target text. Interpreting requires 100% concentration to avoid
mistakes and misunderstanding of the message. Eliminate distractions like cell phones, background
noise, and other distractions to focus on your translation work.
Memorization is the ability to store and reuse information learned from the source language or from the
target language. Use techniques like writing notes, creating dashboards of important information, or
using technology to store useful information. Concentration and memorization will make you a better
interpreter and ensure that you are able to convey your message accurately and a effectively. It is
important to continuously learn and improve your skills in the field of interpreting

An interpreter has to focus on what is happening and has to correctly remember details. In our drama for
this program, a European businessman is about to arrange his social event to a visitor. He has a good
interpreter and it seems that nothing can go wrong. But what happen if the interpreter distracted. Is it
possible to interpret one conversation and focus on sth else at the same time. Let’s see what happen

You can see that even a smallest distraction can effect the interpreter. This is especially true in public
space such as a hotel lobby where this dialog taking place. The interpreter doesn’t concentrate on the
conversation and begin to make mistake. The problem takes with the mobile’s ringing. Let’s see that
again. The host is talking about a Greenwich famous marine time is maritime museum.

Quite clearly the host is confused. He has already mentioned the maritime museum but it seems that
the guest taking about it for the first time. So, what happens? The interpreter is not paying attention,
miss out the information and has caused the confusion. And there is more. Because the interpreter is
distracted, he makes serious error concerning for lunch. Listen carefully.

The interpreter has to focus to convey accurate info, identify the vital info, and concentrate to
remember.

So, we have seen how the interpreter miss concentrate. Know let’s consider memory

Off course, filming s.o’s memory is a little difficult. But look at how these professional interpreters work.

Using memory involve 3 stages: encoding, storage, retrieval (truy xuất).

You can see here in any situation, it is not practical for the interpreter to use a notebook. But what we
are talking here is short-term memory (STM), not the long-term memory of child’s experiences. But the
immediately record of messenges, fact, and figures. Listen to the experts

Not everyone has good memory, but fortunately you can train your memory. Apart from the

You must use your short-term memory all the time. Memory is like a muscle, it can be trained. Memory
comes first (before notes)
