1 UNSYMMETRICAL BENDING OF BEAMS

 In the past, beams treated or considered in bending
theory had a vertical or horizontal axis of symmetry.
 Loads were applied in a direction that is either parallel
or perpendicular to an axis of symmetry.
 For unsymmetrical bending. Deflections, δ and bending
stresses, σ of beams will be considered. These beams
will:
1. Be subjected to loads that are skewed at any angle.
2. Have cross-sections that have or have no axis of
symmetry
 When a cross-section of a beam is not symmetrical
about the plane of bending, unsymmetrical bending
takes place, i.e., in addition to bending due to applied
loads, twisting is observed in the beam.

3.2 EXAMPLES UNSYMMETRICAL SECTIONS & SKEWED
LOADING
 Examples of Skewed Loading on symmetrical cross-sections

 Examples of unsymmetrical sections

 NB!! The practical problem usually consists of skewed loads that

are applied on unsymmetrical cross-sections

 3.3.2 2nd Moment Area & Product of Area

3.3 SECTION PROPERTIES (CONT.)
3.3.3 Standard cases

Ixy= 0 for all

Product Second Moment of Area is given by Ixy = hkA and can be negative. The
signs of h and k are determined using the figure below. Ixy = 0 about an axis of
symmetry.

3.3.4 Second moment of area about a perpendicular axis, UV inclined at an angle, θ
to the x-axis

Product Moment of Area

3.3 SECTION PROPERTIES (CONT.)
Second Moment of Area about the u-axis

Similarly for second moment of area about v-axis

These equations give the 2nd Moment of area, Iu , Iv and Product Moment
of area Iuv about any perpendicular axis, uv that is inclined at an angle,
θ to the x-axis

3.3 SECTION PROPERTIES (CONT.)
3.3.5 Principal Second Moment of Area
 Now for principal axes, UV, the product moment of area, Iuv = 0

 This tangent gives the angle of the principal axes.

 For principal 2nd Moments of Area, IU & IV , substitute cos2θ and sin2θ into
the equations of Iu and Iv to get the following equations.

𝟏𝟏 𝟏𝟏 𝟐𝟐
 𝑰𝑰𝑼𝑼 = 𝑰𝑰𝒙𝒙 + 𝑰𝑰𝒚𝒚 + 𝑰𝑰𝒙𝒙 − 𝑰𝑰𝒚𝒚 + 𝟒𝟒𝑰𝑰𝒙𝒙𝒙𝒙 𝟐𝟐
𝟐𝟐 𝟐𝟐

𝟏𝟏 𝟏𝟏 𝟐𝟐
 𝑰𝑰𝑽𝑽 = 𝑰𝑰𝒙𝒙 + 𝑰𝑰𝒚𝒚 − 𝑰𝑰𝒙𝒙 − 𝑰𝑰𝒚𝒚 + 𝟒𝟒𝑰𝑰𝒙𝒙𝒙𝒙 𝟐𝟐
𝟐𝟐 𝟐𝟐
 These are the maximum and minimum 2nd moments of area
respectively
