Why We Help Others
Why We Help Others
Studies show that 90% of people are more likely to help others when they
see someone else need help. Many of these people are likely to help other people
even in dangerous situations and conditions. It might be because of that helping
other is a popular term in society, or to exposure themselves good. Nevertheless
the factors that affect persons decision about helping other cannot fully explained
by these reasons. There are many other factor that can affect a person decision
for helping other.
The first point to consider is that the human brain is designed to be
altruistic. New discoveries suggests that brain can influence the altruistic
behavior. For example, mirror neurons which are the ordinary brain cells located
throughout the brain light up when a person performing an action or helping
other. As an another example, a study in Oregon University by Bill Harbaugh in
2007 had indicated that a person`s decision about money also influenced by
altruism.
Another major factor is empathy or the ability to understand another
person`s feelings, experiences and etc. Empathy encourages individuals to act in
ways that benefit others without expecting anything in return. For instance, in
Tokyo which is one of the world`s populated city people do not pick up another
one tools for themselves while they found them. That’s because Japanese are
taught early to remember how the others will feel when he discovers his or her
loss.
It’s also essential to recognize that people will help someone who they have
got a relationship with more than a stranger. It means that relationship to
someone will also affect our decision about helping. To illustrate, a study in
Psychological Science found that individuals are significantly more likely to help
someone they perceive as a close friend or family member — with a 70% higher
chance of offering assistance compared to strangers. For more explanation, we
will feel familiar with our relatives more than witnesses outside.
Overall, a human helps other because he is designed to. And empathy can
also affect helping others. Relationship while helping will also affect our many
decisions. But they are some between many reason that influence our helping
decisions. As a result, many factors influence our decisions for helping.
