Course Objectives:
• To acquire basic knowledge of electromagnetism and its fundamental implications.
• To be able to calculate the electric and magnetic fields and associated energies in certain
idealized physical situations.
• To develop elementary capability to work on scientific and technological applications
involving electromagnetic phenomena using simple idealized approximations.

1. Introduction to the course and Electromagnetism (1)
2. Recapitulation of Vector fields and Vector calculus (2)
3. Electrostatic fields with full use of vector calculus calculation of electric fields, Energy in
electrostatics (3)
4. Electrostatic potential and Laplace’s equation and uniqueness of its solution; Method of
images (3)
5. Introduction to multipole expansion, Dipole moment of a charge distribution, potential and
field of a dipole, force and torque on a dipole in an electric field. (3)
6. Electrostatics in a medium, Displacement vector and boundary conditions on fields (2)
7. Linear dielectrics, force on a dielectric in electric fields (2)
8. Magnetostatics with full use of vector calculus (3)
9. Introduction to vector potential; current densities (2)
10. Lorentz force law, force and torque on a magnetic dipole in a magnetic field (2)
11. Magnetostatics in a medium, magnetization, bound currents, magnetic field H, boundary
conditions on B and H fields (2)
12. Magnetic susceptibility, ferro-, para- and diamagnetism in materials (1)
13. Faradays law, energy in magnetic fields; displacement current; (3)
14. Fields produced by time-dependent electric and magnetic fields within quasistatic
approximation (2)
15. Maxwells equations in vacuum and conducting and nonconducting medium, (3)

⚫ Attendance in Lectures and tutorials: Minimum of 75.0 % to pass the course
⚫ Assignments: 20%
⚫ Quizzes (3 Nos.): 20%
⚫ Mid Semester Examination: 25%
⚫ End Semester Examination: 35%

Policy on Academic Honesty:


Use of any unfair means in the course including copying assignments, in quizzes or the
examinations by any student will result in awarding the guilty student an F grade in the course (non-
negotiable). The matter will also be escalated to the DoAA office for any further disciplinary action.
