Course Purpose

The purpose of this course is to enable mentos supervisors, team leaders, and
managers to apply coaching techniques to help individuals improve performance and
meet organisational service standards.
This courses covers the prerequisites and foundational knowledge to develop
coaching and mentoring skills that leaders can use to enhance team performance
when applied fully.

Entry Requirements (Learning Assumed to be in Place)

Learners who are enrolled in this course should already be able to:
 Demonstrate basic understanding of business engagement
 Communicate effectively at NQF Level 2
 Understand Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, learners will be able to:


 Explain the concept of coaching in a business environment.
 Demonstrate coaching skills and techniques for improving work performance.
 Develop and implement action plans to coach team members.

Course Duration

2 Days of face-to-face learning


Course Topics

Topic 1: Introduction to Coaching & Mentoring


 Defining coaching & mentoring in a workplace context
 Comparing coaching, mentoring, counseling, and training
 Identifying qualities of an effective coach
 Understanding the team leader or supervisor’s role as a coach

Topic 2: Core Coaching & Mentoring Skills and Techniques


 Importance of active and effective listening
 Questioning techniques to assess understanding and skills
 Giving different types of feedback (positive, constructive, developmental)
 Techniques for encouraging self-reflection and self-assessment

Topic 3: Developing Action Plans

 Steps in the coaching process: from assessment to action


 Creating coaching & mentoring action plans for two team members
 Setting Key Performance Areas (KPAs) and measurable outcomes
 Contracting roles, responsibilities, timeframes, and resources

Topic 4: Monitoring Progress and Evaluating Impact


 Gathering evidence of improvement (formal and informal)
 Making decisions: Sign off, continue coaching, or refer
 Using feedback from coachees to refine coaching strategies
 Evaluating the return on coaching effort (impact vs input)

Assessments & Certification

Formative Assessment:
 Group activities
 Class participation and discussions
 Practical work (e.g., Coaching and Mentoring feedback)

Summative Assessment:
 Final project: Create coaching and Mentoring action plans
 Knowledge assessment (written)

 Impact assessment
