Semester Test 1 – 24 March 2015

COURSE: MECHANICAL ENGINEERING SCIENCE

TIME: 90 Minutes

SUBJECT: INTRODUCTION TO ENGINEERING DESIGN 1A (IIN 1A11) MARKS: 50

This paper consists of 2 pages

EXAMINERS: Mr. M Bhamjee

Dr. A Maneschijn
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 Answer all the questions
 Name and explain all assumptions
 Show all the steps in your calculations clearly
 One (1) mark per fact
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION 1: [10]

a) Define the concept “Technology”. (5)

b) Define Hooke’s Law and give the equation that describes Hooke’s Law. (5)

QUESTION 2: [10]

Two lengths of material are connected together by a single rivet as shown in Figure 1. If
failure of this joint is due to the shearing of this rivet:

a) Determine the force to cause failure if the rivet has a 10 mm root diameter. The
allowable shear stress is 70 MPa. (5)

b) Determine the shear strain if the shear stress is 50 MPa and the shear modulus is
80 GPa. (5)
Figure 1.

QUESTION 3: [15]

A solid cylinder of 60 mm diameter is subjected to a tensile load of 100 kN. One part of
the cylinder is 400 mm in length and is made of steel. The other part of the cylinder is
made of aliminium and is 600 mm in length. Esteel = 200 GPa and Ealuminium = 70 GPa.

a) Determine the elongation in the steel part of the cylinder and the elongation in the
aluminium part of the cylinder. (5)

b) Determine the total elongation of the cylinder. (5)

c) Determine the tensile stress in the cylinder. (5)

QUESTION 4: [15]

A solid brass rod with a 25 mm diameter is placed concentrically inside a steel tube with
an inside diameter of 25 mm and an outside diameter of 50 mm. The rod and the tube
are rigidly connected at both ends and have an original length of 1 m.

a) Determine the stresses in the two materials if the temperature is increased from
15⁰C to 95⁰C. (10)

b) With no temperature change, calculate the resulting stresses in the steel and in the
brass if the compound bar is subjected to an axial compression of 50 kN. (5)

𝛼𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑒𝑙 = 11.6 (10−6 )/ ℃ and 𝛼𝑏𝑟𝑎𝑠𝑠 = 18.7 (10−6 )/ ℃
