PRESENTATION 2 Module 2 Research Design

The document outlines the concept of research design, defining it as a framework for collecting and analyzing data. It distinguishes between research design, research methods, and research methodology, highlighting their respective roles in the research process. Additionally, it categorizes research designs into quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods, detailing their characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages.

Definition of
Research Design
Churchill 1995
• It is the framework or plan for a study, used as a guide in
collecting and analyzing data. It is the blueprint that is
followed in completing a study
QuestionPro
• It is the framework of research methods and techniques
chosen by a researcher.
Research design ensures that the study will:

be relevant to the use economical

problem; and procedures.
Research Design vs.
Research Methods vs.
Research Methodology
Research Design
• is the framework or plan for a study, used as a guide in
collecting and analyzing data.
Research Methods
• are the strategies, processes or techniques utilized in the
collection of data or evidence for analysis in order to
uncover new information or create better understanding of
a topic.
Research Methodology
• is the systematic approach to solve the research problem
and reach a new conclusion.
The Primary Difference Between the
Research Method & Research Methodology
Research Method Research Methodology
1. Seeks to answer: What did the researcher use to 1. Seeks to answer: How did the researcher

3. Involve the tasks of conducting experiments, 3. Involves the learning of various techniques to

and skills learned through research methodology. perform, tests, experiments, survey, and critical
analysis.
4. Aims at finding solutions to research problems 4. Ensures the employment of the correct
procedures to solve the problems.
5. The end of any specific or non specific research. 5. Paves the way to choose appropriate research
methods & this is the beginning of any research.
Classification of
Research Design
1. Quantitative Research
• is a means of testing objective, theories by examining
the relationship among variables.
2. Qualitative Research
• begins with assumptions and the use of
interpretative/theoretical frameworks that inform the
study of research problems addressing the meaning
individuals or group ascribe to a social or human
problem.
3. Mixed Methods Research
• It represents research that involves collecting, analyzing,
and interpreting quantitative and qualitative data in a
single study that investigate the same underlying
phenomenon.

5 Types of Quantitative Research

Descriptive Research Studies are aimed at finding out what is, so observational and survey
methods are frequently used to collect descriptive data.

Correlational Determines the extent to which two factors are related, not the extent
Research to which factor causes change to another.

Experimental A study conducted in the form of a contracted group and a group

Research experiments. Each sample is give random treatment into the group.

Causal-Comparative A type of research that aims to determine the causal relationship

Research between variables.

Survey Research A study using questionnaire administered either in written form or

orally to quantify , describe, or characterize an individual or a group.

Advantages of Using Qualitative Research Design

Ability to probe into responses or observations as needed and obtain more

detailed descriptions and explanations of experiences, behaviors, and beliefs.

One can get information not anticipated by the researcher.

Multiple methods for gathering data on sensitive subjects.

Data collection is usually cost efficient.

Disadvantages of Using Qualitative Research Design

More difficult to analyze Data collection is usually Lack of objectivity as affected

time consuming by researcher’s view
Types of Qualitative Research Design

Focuses on individual experiences, beliefs, and perceptions. Text used as a proxy for human
Phenomenology experience.

Ethnography Oriented toward studying shared meanings and practices.

Uses systematic and exhaustive comparison of text segments to build thematic structure and
Grounded Theory theory from a body of text.
Provides an in-dept look at one test subject. The subject can be a person or family, business
Case Study or organization, or a town or a city.

Historical Model Describe past events in order to understand present patterns and anticipate future choices.

Narrative Model It occurs over extended period of time and compiles information as it happens.
Types of Mixed Methods Research

Most common and well known approach, the purpose of this design is to obtain
Triangulation Design different but complementary data on the same topic to best understand the research
topic.

Embedded Design One data set provides a supportive secondary role in a study based primarily on the
other data type.

Explanatory Design It is two-face method with overall purpose of helping qualitative data explain or build
upon initial quantitative results.

Exploratory Design The intent of this design is for the results of the first method (qualitative design) help
develop the second method (quantitative design).
