Life Processes Class10 Notes

Chapter 6 of the Class 10 Science notes covers essential life processes necessary for survival, including nutrition, respiration, transportation, and excretion. It explains different modes of nutrition, types of respiration, and the systems involved in transportation and excretion in humans and plants. Key activities demonstrate concepts such as the necessity of sunlight for photosynthesis and the production of CO2 during respiration.

Life Processes - Class 10 Science Notes

Chapter 6: Life Processes

Life Processes = processes required to maintain life.

Examples: Nutrition, Respiration, Transportation, Excretion.

1. Nutrition

Nutrition: Process by which living organisms obtain and utilize food.

Modes of Nutrition:

- Autotrophic Nutrition: Organisms make their own food (e.g., Plants)

- Heterotrophic Nutrition: Organisms depend on others for food (e.g., Animals)

Photosynthesis

Definition: Process by which green plants prepare food using sunlight, CO2, water.

Equation:

6CO2 + 6H2O --(Sunlight, Chlorophyll)--> C6H12O6 + 6O2

Steps in Photosynthesis:

1. Absorption of light energy

2. Conversion to chemical energy

3. Splitting of water

4. Reduction of CO2 to carbohydrates

Activity 6.1
Objective: To prove that sunlight is necessary for photosynthesis.

- Take a potted plant, destarch it, cover a part of a leaf with black paper.

- Keep in sunlight, then perform iodine test.

- Observation: Covered part does not turn blue-black.

2. Respiration

Respiration: The breakdown of food to release energy.

Types:

- Aerobic Respiration: Uses oxygen (produces more energy)

- Anaerobic Respiration: No oxygen (less energy)

Human Respiratory System:

- Organs: Nose -> Pharynx -> Larynx -> Trachea -> Bronchi -> Lungs

Activity 6.2

Objective: To show CO2 is produced during respiration.

- Blow air through a straw into lime water.

- Lime water turns milky = CO2 presence confirmed.

3. Transportation

Transportation in Human Beings:

- Heart: Pumps blood

- Blood Vessels: Arteries (carry oxygenated blood), Veins (carry deoxygenated blood)

- Blood: RBCs, WBCs, Platelets, Plasma

Double Circulation: Blood passes twice through heart in one complete cycle.

Transportation in Plants:

- Xylem: Transport of water

- Phloem: Transport of food (Translocation)

Activity 6.3

Objective: To show transport of water in plants.

- Put a plant stem in colored water.

- Colored water rises through xylem, coloring veins of leaves.

4. Excretion

Excretion: Process of removing waste products.

Excretion in Humans:

- Organs: Kidneys -> Ureters -> Urinary Bladder -> Urethra

- Nephron: Functional unit of kidney.

Important: Urea is major nitrogenous waste in humans.

Excretion in Plants:

- Gums, resins, waste gases.

Important Diagrams:

- Human Digestive System

- Human Respiratory System

- Human Heart

- Excretory System

- Nephron

- Cross-section of Leaf (for photosynthesis)

Keywords:

- Autotrophs

- Heterotrophs

- Photosynthesis

- Aerobic Respiration

- Anaerobic Respiration

- Double Circulation

- Nephron

- Excretion

Chapter Summary:

Life processes are necessary for survival.

Main life processes include nutrition, respiration, transportation, and excretion.
