Subject: Physics
Chapter 1: Motion in a Straight line
Assignment
General Instructions
• This assignment consists of 10 questions.
• Please take out a print of this assignment and paste/staple it in your notebook neatly.
• It is compulsory to attempt all the questions

1. A stone is thrown vertically up from the ground. It reaches a maximum height of 50 m in 10 seconds. After
what time it will reach the ground from maximum height position?
a) 1.2 seconds
b) 10 seconds
c) 5 seconds
d) 25 seconds

2. Velocity – time curve for a body projected vertically upwards is:

a) ellipse
b) hyperbola
c) parabola
d) straight line

3. The velocity – time graph of an object moving along a straight line is as shown in the given figure.

Find the net distance covered by the object in the time interval between t = 0 to t = 10 s. Also, find the
displacement in time 0 to 10 s.

4. A ball thrown up is caught by the thrower after 4 s. How high did it go and with what velocity was it thrown?
How far was it below the highest point 3 s after it was thrown?

5. Two balls of different masses (one lighter and other heavier) are thrown vertically upwards with the same
speed. Which one will pass through the point of projection in their downward direction with the greater
speed?

6. Derive the first and second equation of motion for uniformly accelerated motion by graphical method.

7. On a 60 km trach, a train travels the first 30 km with a uniform speed of 30 km/hr. How fast must the train
travel the next 30 km so as to average 40 km/hr for the entire trip?

8. The acceleration of a particle in m/s2 is given by a = 3t2 + 2t + 2, where t is in second. if the particle starts
with a velocity v = 2 m/s at t = 0, then find the velocity at the end of 2 seconds.

9. The motion of a particle is described by the equation u = at. The distance travelled by the particle in first 4
seconds is:
a) 4a
b) 12a
c) 6a
d) 8a

10. The given figure gives the x – t plot of a particle in one – dimensional motion. Three different equal intervals
of time are shown. In which interval is the average speed greatest, and in which interval is it the least? Give
the sign of average velocity for each interval.
