1. Description

The KONE MonoSpace lift is a machine room less concept.

Machinery and drive are installed in the headroom of the well or in an existing machine room. A
maintenance access panel (MAP) is located outside the well, next to the door of topmost landing or
on the floor below or above the topmost landing or in an existing machine room. In case of KCE and
RBO any location is possible. The control/drive cabinet can be installed in the headroom of the well.
The suspension is of the under slung type with a reeving factor 2:1. The machinery and the rope
fixing brackets are mounted on the guide rails.
The MonoSpace lift is delivered with one of the following machineries, NMX05, NMX07, NMX11 or
NHX06, NHX11 and with the Hermes car .The MonoSpace lift is designed to transport passengers
and loads; this lift can be delivered for the nominal car loads of 240-1150 kg with rated speeds up to
1.75 m/s.
The diverter pulleys under the car and/or counterweight have a D/d ratio of 30 - 40.
The layout for most of the MonoSpace lifts is given in Figure 1. For more details of the MonoSpace
variants we refer to the following pages and the technical files.

event of fire), EN 81-58 (Fire resistance test of landing doors), EN 81-21 (New lifts in existing
buildings). The lift can comply with EN 81-77 (see conditions 3.16). The KONE MonoSpace lift
scaffold-less installation method has been certified additionally under the JumpLift 200, JumpLift 600,
and Jumplift 800 installation method with certificate number NL22-400-1001-095-04 (CT-01.01.203).
Vertical Shaft Optimization:
In case fitted with KDM or KDX drive and KCE PESSRAL 4.0 or higher, KCEABS and KCE ETSL,
the lift can also be used with reduced stroke buffers with rated and/or terminal speeds of 1.0m/s up to
1.75m/s. (See conditions 3.18.). Two magnetic absolute encoders with a corresponding metal ring
are installed at the car’s diverting pulley’s, applied as inputs for the KCEABS that calculates the
position and speed of the car. In order to assure the ETS function additional features are part of this:
electronic balance check, traction (slip) monitoring, drive assisted brake test (every 24 hr). Proper
setting is done by safety parameters, as prescribed in the KCE Safety Manual.
MonoSpace® 4 DX:
New hoisting technology is introduced for MonoSpace 400 - 1000 kg that consists out of the
following:
-KONE EcoRopeTM, high friction suspension means including smaller pulley’s and suitable
terminations
- 2 new machines NHX06 and NHX11 with a smaller traction sheave
- ICSCR sling with parallel hoisting beam and an interface to Hermes car
- Modular car, 2 new cwt frames (CWF-4R and CWF-5R) with 2 pulley’s
- Lower pit due to possibility of applying a crash-release apron
- Load weighting devices integrated at the machine bedplate
KONE EcoRopeTM with its prescribed terminations is certified itself. When applied in MonoSpace® 4
DX, additional functionality had to be implemented, like:
- car- and counterweight stalling detection by means of slack rope detection on both sides of the end
terminals at rope hangers. Function implemented in common lift SW. This function is part of this
certification.
- Rope bending counter. Function implemented in common KCE lift SW. This function is part of this
certification.
- Slip supervision when on RDF

frame or be mounted as a standalone casing against the front-/sidewall of the well or in an existing
machine room. In case of KCE and RBO any location is possible.
- If the maintenance access panel is installed on the below the topmost landing there shall be an
additional service switch in the headroom of the well cutting the incoming power supply of the
drive and the control.
- The maintenance access panel shall be located in an area which is suitably protected against
weather conditions such as rain and temperatures below + 5°C including the working area (min.
500 x 700 mm) in front of maintenance access panel.
- If the space in front of the maintenance access panel allows the passing of public this min.
horizontal free space needs to have a depth of 1.20 m.
- Depending on the number of passing public and the nature of work the fence, rounding the
working area may be needed.
- The maintenance access panel shall not be located in areas where interference with public can be
expected to lead to dangerous situations
- The maintenance access panel shall be vandalism resistant. It shall be IP33 protected or a flash
symbol shall be placed on the outside of the door

© LIFTINSTITUUT B.V. NL16-400-1002-002-60 rev.14 date: 18-04-2024 Page 7 of 20

Reproduction of this report is only allowed in full under the conditions stipulated in regulation 2.0.1 (www.liftinstituut.com) F4-53 version: 10.0
- The two locking elements of the locks of the maintenance access panel cover must be installed in
opposite directions; at the upper one on top side, at the lower one on bottom side.
- The lighting intensity on the apparatus and in front of the opened maintenance access panel shall
be 200 LUX within the maintenance access panel.
- The electrical equipment inside the maintenance access panel shall have a protection degree
IP2X; the open PCB’s are protected by a cover, on which a high voltage warning sign is fitted.
With LCE the RDF buttons shall be protected with IPXXD cover.
- Inside of the cover of the maintenance access panel all different electrical parts (switches) have to
be indicated, as well as their different modes of switching. Furthermore an indication has to be
present how to release the brake of the machinery manually, as also a warning indicating that
special rescue operations have to be carried.
- Manual opening of the brake shall require two actions (switch + button) in RBORC or MRRC.
- The primary side of the main power switch has to be marked with the flash sign.
- Because movements of the car cannot be seen from outside the well, the direction, door zone and
the speed of the car have to be indicated in the maintenance access panel. The indication shall be
backed-up by battery.
- For (KCE) Warranty stickers need to be on the cover of KCEDZS, KCEMSC and KCECCG.
- When the KDX drive is applied, a main switch with an additional contact shall be installed. The
extra contact shall cut the supply from the battery inside the KDX panel, when the main switch is
operated.
- When the KDX drive is applied, a method is available to disconnect the drive from the brakes and
use an additional tool BBR to open the brakes, by connecting it to the general net.
3.2. Machinery
- Machinery lighting intensity shall be min. 200 LUX
- The horizontal distance sideways of the traction sheave up to the backside of the car guide rail
must be 5 mm at least.
- The device for monitoring the lift motor temperature (circuit of NTC-resistors) can be checked
during inspection travel.
- In case of KCE ETS: After suspension ropes have been replaced, a new setup run is required in
order to assure proper operation of ETS functionality.
- A locking pin (blocking device) shall be provided on the car roof, with which the car can be
secured at working height during inspection and adjustment activities at the machine; in secured
position a safety contact engaged by the locking pin shall cut the safety circuit.
- A repair instruction for the replacement of the machinery shall be available on request.
Note: the stop button on/near the machinery can be omitted.
3.3. Torque limiter (steel ropes only)
The machine torque is limited within the drive. By raising temporarily this limitation in the software of
the control, after temporarily accommodation of the adjustment of the load weight device, it has to be
proved on recall mode that:
- The traction sheave will slip in respect of the stationary suspension ropes in case the
counterweight is resting on its buffer and the machine is rotating in the “up”-direction.
- The traction sheave will slip in respect of the stationary suspension ropes in case the overloaded
car (125%) is engaged by the safety gear and the machine is rotating in the “down”-direction.
3.4. Drive and control
KONE has issued a Declaration of Conformity for manufacturing of:
1) the monitoring circuit for deactivation of the main contactors ("start permit") and
© LIFTINSTITUUT B.V. NL16-400-1002-002-60 rev.14 date: 18-04-2024 Page 8 of 20
Reproduction of this report is only allowed in full under the conditions stipulated in regulation 2.0.1 (www.liftinstituut.com) F4-53 version: 10.0
2) the circuit for monitoring the temperature of the drive.
3) the electronic safety circuit for STO & SBC.
lt is not needed to dismantle the drive or to remove the cover of the control box for performing these
checks at final inspections or periodical examinations. These checks are
performed after final composition at manufacturing.
This Declaration of Conformity for manufacturing for 1) and 2) is needed for both the KDL16 drives
and KDM40 drives.
This Declaration of Conformity for manufacturing for 2) and 3) is needed for KDX drives.
The KDX drive has a SIL 3 certification for both Safe Torque Off (STO) as Safe Brake Control (SBC)
and can therefore be installed without motor- and brake contactors. Safety inputs must be supplied
from drive’s internal 24 VDC (PELV) power supply (24V_SAFETY) and be controlled using
mechanical contacts.
In case of KCE ETS: Every 24 hr. a drive assisted automatic brake test is performed to ensure that
sufficient brake torque is guaranteed to ensure correct and sufficient ETS functionality.
3.5. Balancing
Balancing is variable between 40 - 50% of rated load. Actual balancing percentage can be found on
the lift installation drawings.
- For steel ropes, mandatory compensation chain usage, to reach actual balancing percentage can
be required.
- For KONE EcoRopeTM, no compensation chain is used.
3.6. Well
- In the top of the well a minimum of two lifting hooks/loops shall be permanently available, one
above the car and one above the machine; on the construction drawings the following items shall
be clearly stated:
- positions of the hooks/loops
- load capacity of the hooks/loops.
- Fixed means for hoisting shall be located outside the free vertical distances or the safety space on
the car roof. Removable means for hoisting must be stored on a fixed place on the car roof or in
the pit or on the wall of the headroom, protected from falling down accidentally.
- Electrical cables may be installed directly to the walls fixed at every 500 mm at least, as well in
horizontal way as in vertical way.
- Wiring bundle in the trunks must be fixed to the trunks at regular distances (e.g. every 2 m).
- The electrical safety contact of the overspeed governor(s) is in the clear projection of the car roof.
Therefore the following measures shall be taken:
• The projection of overspeed governor is clearly marked on the car roof with black/yellow
marking.
• The overspeed governor is fitted with a deflection plate which is also clearly marked with
black/yellow marking.
• The car roof is fitted with a toe guard outside of the projection of the overspeed governor
and maximum 15 cm from the car roof edge.
• If a balustrade is installed the top hand rails shall be marked with a pictogram. Warning for
the possible crushing danger. The minimum distance of the handrail to the overspeed
governor is 10 cm

3.7. Electrical components in the well
For the different casings in the headroom of the well near the topmost landing (the drive module, the
control module, the casing with resistors for the brake and eventually a casing for options like EBD)
the following requirements are valid:
- The casings shall be mounted to the wall such a way that they are easily accessible from the car
roof.
- With LCE, the casing of the control (SEP) must be located at the level of the topmost landing floor
or at the level of the second topmost floor. Lighting intensity in front of the SEP casing shall be
min. 200 LUX.
- The covers of the casings are fixed by means of slot holes to prevent falling down after losing the
fixing screws.
- The horizontal distance between casings and the car must be 50 mm at least.
- Horizontal distance between the inner side of the balustrade and the inner backside of the casings
must not exceed 600 mm.
- With LCE, the connectors in the SEP casing that remains live after disconnecting the main power
must be fitted with a flash warning sign.
- In some cases the control cabinet is located behind the suspension ropes. To make save incidental
maintenance possible the cabinet can be shifted side ways to allow free access. With small shafts
(DD ≤ 1000) the ropes can partly be in front of this control cabinet. The maximum overlay is 7 cm.
- The brake resistor casing must be mounted in the headroom of the well at a minimum distance of
500 mm from the machinery.
3.8. Over-speed governor
- The data plate on the over-speed governor must be readable from the car roof side.
- In case OL 20 overspeed governor is used, the prescribed tension system STW shall be applied
and the set conditions shall be met. (As listed in the List of Safety Components).
- In case the maintenance access panel is installed at the one but topmost landing floor, and the
topmost landing floor is not accessible:
• reset of the overspeed contact must be executed by remote control, or
• the reset action is executed by emergency operation (recall operation, 2 persons needed),
• means to unlock access to the topmost landing door must be at disposal of the maintenance
person.
3.9. Car
- The control station for inspection operation on top of the car needs to be provided with actuation
buttons that have to be pushed simultaneously (one as a common and one for the direction).
- The measurement of the distance according 5.2.5.6.1.1 of EN 81-20:2020 shall take place on 70%
of the height of the car guide shoe. This means that another 50 mm can be added to the value
measured on the top of the car guide shoe.
- The car top electrical connection box can be installed at the balustrade, but is not considered part
of it. The following shall be met:
• a free height space underneath the car top box of 120 mm shall be present
• the car top box should not interfere with the refuge space rectangular block
• the car top box itself should not be a standing area. This means that at least one side shall
be less than 150 mm width
• the box shall be a little lower than the balustrade top rail

- In case of KCE ETS a magnetic absolute encoder with a corresponding metal ring is installed at
each of the car’s diverting pulley for the ICS sling while the KCE ABS board is installed below the
car.
- Label is provided on car roof to indicate refuge space high and max number of person allowed to
carry out inspection and maintenance work.
- When refuge space requirements above the car are met, but the headroom of the well is not
sufficient to accommodate a 1100 mm high balustrade on the car roof and this balustrade is
required due to the free distance in a horizontal plane beyond the inner edge of the handrail of the
balustrade and the well wall, several solutions are possible:
• a telescopic balustrade can be used in combination with the LPT device (pillar under the
counterweight).
• a certified telescopic balustrade, type SEF EB and DB from Vulka BV, can be applied
without any other means.
- When refuge space requirements above the car (as defined in clause 5.2.5.7.3 of EN81-20) are
not met:
According to Lifts Directive 2014/33/EU annex I, section 2.2, the lift must be designed and
constructed to prevent the risk of crushing when the car is in one of its extreme positions.
However, in specific cases, other appropriate means may be provided to avoid this risk. It should
be noted that, Liftinstituut issues an EU type-examination certificate for the MonoSpace with
means to prevent the crushing risk other than permanent free space or refuge. That is why
Liftinstituut clearly states that the installation of a MonoSpace with reduced clearances according
to the EU type-examination certificate is permitted only in cases where the requirement for free
space or refuge is impossible to fulfill and where prior approval has been granted by the Member
State where the lift is to be installed according to the national procedure, if any.
For used components see the chapter “insufficient refuge space solution” in ch.1 and the
applicable section in the List of Safety Components, Type certificate NL23-400-1002-002-90
Rev.#.
- When refuge space requirements are met, but the headroom of the well is not sufficient to
accommodate a 1100 mm high balustrade on the car roof and this balustrade is required due to
the free distance in a horizontal plane beyond the inner edge of the handrail of the balustrade and
the well wall, several solutions are possible:

without any other means.
3.10. Levelling / re-levelling (none KCE)
- The magnetic strips for activating the magnetic switch of the door zones do not need to be fixed
on the car guide rail permanently; sliding one or both the strips out of the indicated door zone
results in not opening of the doors.
3.11. Counterweight
- The maximum compression for the non-linear buffers under the counterweight can be limited to
80% instead of 90%.
- In case of hydraulic buffer the counterweight screen lower edge can be located maximum 300
above the pit bottom.
- When CWT buffer fixed to the CWT frame itself and buffer hitting to the pit bottom the striker plate
is not required.

3.12. Pit
- A special refuge space 500 mm x1000 mm with a height of 700 mm can be used in case of small
car dimensions. For this solution, a deviation is accepted for the distance between the two car
buffer pillars which is 650 mm instead of 700 mm, in case the buffer stands penetrate this refuge
space and mentioned in the reports as such. After further review and testing this distance of 650
mm can be reduced to 600 mm under the condition that the space beyond the pillars is 800 mm
(fore and aft).
- In case compensation chain is used, it might protrude in refuge space. Only encapsulated chain
like Whisperflex can be used in this case.
- Label is provided in pit to indicate refuge space high and max number of person allowed to carry
out inspection and maintenance work. If only a single position refuge space position is available
and its location is not obvious, its location shall be marked on the pit floor.
- In case of short floor to floor distance with a 2 stop elevator the apron can be removed to access
the pit safely. In this case the apron is monitored with a safety contact.
- The pit inspection station is equipped with a sensor to ensure that the inspection station is
returned to its holder before the lift can be reset.
- The height of the fixing brackets of the pedestals of the car buffers shall be such that requirements
from EN81-20 clause 5.2.5.8.2 a)2 are met.
3.13. Rescue operations
Electrical rescue brake opening device (RBORC or MRRC) will be used in manual rescue operations
and will act as car ascending overspeed protection mean.
For special rescue operations additional equipment is needed. Depending on the situation a special
lifting tool can be used.
- The tools shall be available to persons performing special rescue operations without undue delay.
- In the instruction manual it shall be clearly stated how to act in case special rescue operations are
necessary.
- The maximum speed at RBO / EBOI operation is limited to a value below the buffer impact speed.
3.14. Special lifting tool
In addition to special rescue operations the special lifting tool is also needed with load testing in order
to lift the car out of the engaged safety gear. For EcoRopeTM the proper clamp has to be used.
3.15. Fire protection
Compliance with the essential demands of the Lifts Directive, Annex I, chapters 4.2, 4.4 and 4.10
shall have to be checked at final inspections. These demands can be fulfilled by matching with the
requirements of the standards EN 81-58, EN 81-72, EN 81-73.
3.16. Earthquake features (EN 81-77)
The lift can be equipped with additional parts to comply with the requirements of EN 81-77.
This parts include, rope guards on the car, counterweight and machine, a stiffer CWT frame, full
protection on governor and additional protection on the tensioning pulley of the governor rope,
additional retaining devices on car and counterweight frame preventing the car/counterweight from
leaving the guide rails. Snag point are protected when travel more than 20 m.
The maximum design acceleration is 2.5 m/s2 Category 1.

002-90 Rev.# and its accompanying annex shall be present at each modellift during handover,
commissioning and final inspection by an Inspection Body. In this way the installed components can
be verified for suitability.

3.18. Reduced stroke of buffers (KCE with KDM/KDX)

The lift can be equipped with reduced stroke buffers beyond the requirements as listed in EN 81-20
5.8.2.2.2. The minimum buffer stroke can also be less than 0,42m.
The lift shall be additionally equipped with KCE ETS and KCE ABS and the safety software version
shall be PESSRAL 4.0 or higher.
The buffers to be used are listed in the safety component list. The allowed application speed of the
buffers in relation to the rated speed of buffers is listed below. For the buffer nominal speed of 1,0
m/s a non-linear energy accumulating buffer can be used.
The final validation of ETSL capability of an elevator system with the Standard Shaft Solution has to
be verified with the KCE ETSL on-site test.

Allowed reduced speed buffer:

Nominal speed Impact speed of buffers Buffer nominal speed
1 m/s – 1.75 m/s ≥ 1.15 m/s 1 m/s

3.19. EcoRopeTM
When EcoRopeTM is installed, the following has to be taken care of:
-All conditions as set in the EcoRopeTM certificate NL24-400-1002-002-83 have to be met.
-Discard criteria shall be present on site (OM-01.03.112). Ropes shall be renewed based on that or
when the max # of bends is reached or 15 Y calendar time after rope manufacturing date have
passed. Ropes shall always be replaced in complete sets.
- It is allowed to apply these ropes in a lift well with glass walls, as long as the applied glass is at
least 97,1% UV protected
-Rope and terminals shall be marked and labelled
-Stalling detection system shall be installed
-Rope bending counter has to be installed
-Common KCE lift SW shall be ver.16.1.40.## or higher
-Ropes shall be grounded
-Before putting the lift into service, the traction shall be tested according EN81-20 art. 6.3.3. Traction
tests can lead to a stalling detection or (while on RDF) to a slip supervision error or torque
supervision error.

3.20 Rope bending counter

KONE bending counter system bends calculation principle is based on where full trip is defined as
drive to one direction (continuous or non-continuous) including at least one stop as long as trip
direction will change. In this definition each direction change of the elevator is seen as full trip.
-a full trip is 3 bends, which leads to a max allowable # of bends for the EcoRopeTM in MonoSpace® 4
DX of 6.700.000.
-Replacement of controller or drive shall not lead to losing # of bends, therefore the data in KCECPU
are backed up in KCECCG.
-parameter protection to be present

-the set rope serial code in the counter has to be checked with the number on the rope label during
inspections. Rope serial ID and discard limit can be set by a technician in possession of the (new)
rope label. Setting needs to be done twice and previous rope serial number cannot be used.
-the counter gives a pre-warning when 99,5% of # of bends are reached.
-the counter initiates out of normal service, once the # of bends have been reached. Only RDF or
Inspection mode is possible. Reset can only be done by entering the new rope serial number from
the new rope label.
-The counter meets all requirements as set in ISO/DIS 8100-1:2023.

3.21. Car stalling detector

At both terminal sides ( car & cwt) a stalling detection system shall be installed that is triggering a
safety switch and the KCE OPT or KCE BFCB board that generates the proper fault code when car
or cwt stalls.
-the correct prescribed spring shall be used in the slack rope device with the suitable setting*:
Spring type Strength Pre-compression
Car side termination Lesjofors 2717 36 N/mm 14 mm
Cwt side termination Lesjofors 1874 22 N/mm 25,9 mm

3.21. Rope slip supervision

Rope slip shall be detected (no safety function) in order to prevent damage to the TPU coating of the
EcoRopeTM. This is performed at RDF by monitoring the actual traction sheave acceleration peaks.
When it is over the limit for a set time, the brake is closed and the speed ramped down.
3.22. Crash-release Apron
For pits with a minimum depth of 950 mm, a crash-release car apron can be used. It shall not move
inwards , even when the car is on the fully compressed buffers, but it is able to telescope upwards in
case something is on the pit floor and so guarantee 100 mm clearance. Based on RA, this
telescoping is not monitored by a safety switch.
