Lesson 2: Sentence Structure
What is Sentence Structure?

Sentence structure refers to the way words are organized and


arranged in a sentence to form a meaningful statement.

It follows a specific grammatical order that includes essential


components like subject, verb, object, complement, and
modifier.

Each sentence must contain at least a subject (S) and a verb


(V) to be complete. More complex sentences may include
additional elements like objects (O), complements (C), and
modifiers (M).
Basic Components of Sentence Structure

Subject (S) Verb (V)


The subject is the who or what of the sentence; The verb expresses an action, state, or
it performs the action or is being described. occurrence.

Example: Example:
✦ John runs every morning. (John is the subject.) ✦ She studies hard. (studies = action verb)
✦ The cat is sleeping. (The cat is the subject.) ✦ They are happy. (are = linking verb)

Subjects can be: Types of verbs:


✔ A noun (dog, school, happiness) ✔ Action verbs (run, eat, study)
✔ A pronoun (he, she, they, it) ✔ Linking verbs (is, am, are, seem, become)
✔ A noun phrase (The little boy, My best friend) ✔ Auxiliary (helping) verbs (can, must, will, have)
Basic Components of Sentence Structure

Object (O) Complement (C)

An object receives the action of the verb. A complement gives additional meaning to the
subject or object.
Example:
✦ She reads a book. (a book = direct object) Example:
✦ He gave me a present. (me = indirect object, ✦ She is a doctor. (Complement for the subject)
a present = direct object) ✦ They made the room clean. (Complement for
the object)
Types of objects:
✔ Direct Object (DO) → receives the action (I Types of complements:

Basic Components of Sentence Structure

Modifier (M)

A modifier adds extra information to a sentence, such as


time, place, manner, or reason.

Example:
✦ She studies every night. (when?)
✦ He lives in New York. (where?)

Types of modifiers:
✔ Adverbs (quickly, often, here, yesterday)
✔ Prepositional Phrases (in the park, at the office)
Basic Sentence Structure

SV (Subject + Verb) SVO (Subject + Verb + Object

Only contains a subject and a verb Contains a subject, a verb, and a


(predicate). direct object (receiver of the action).

Example: Example:

✦ She runs. ✦ She eats an apple.


✦ The baby cries. ✦ They play football.
