Page 5 Language: Keeping Acholi Alive

Topic: Why Our Language Matters

Date: Monday, 6th May

This class felt personal. We talked about local languages, and how every time we
speak them, we protect something bigger than just words.

For me, that language is Acholi.

When I say Apwoyo, Im not just saying thank you. Im passing down a sound, a
rhythm, a piece of identity that connects me to my roots, my people, and my
ancestors.

We were asked:

If our generation doesnt speak it, who will?

A few ways to help keep Acholi alive:

Use it at home, even if just for small phrases.

Teach your friends one word a week like lamal (light) or pit (strong).

Record stories, proverbs, or songs from elders before theyre lost.

Make short content online in Acholi reels, quotes, captions.

?? What stood out to me:

Language carries values, not just vocab.

Losing a language is like losing a piece of history.

We dont need permission to be proud of our language.

So from today, Im choosing to speak more Acholi. Not just because its ours, but
because every word is a thread in the fabric of our culture. And thats worth
keeping alive.
