Applications of Parabolas
1. The cables of a suspension bridge form a parabolic arch. The supporting pillars have a height
of 16 𝑚 above the level of the bridge and are 200 𝑚 apart. The lowest point of the cable is 6 m
above the roadway of the bridge. Calculate the height of the cable 80 𝑚 from the center of the
bridge.
3. The towers of a suspension bridge are 800 feet apart and rise 160 feet above the road. The
cable between the towers has the shape of a parabola, and the cable just touches the sides of
the road midway between the towers. What is the height of the cable 100 feet from a tower?
4. The concrete bridge in the figure has a parabolic arch, it is
known to have a clear span (opening) of 80 𝑚 and a
maximum height of 10𝑚. Calculate the height of the arch at
8 m from the center of the arch.
5. The exterior door of an aircraft hangar is parabolic. The door is 120 feet wide and 90 feet
high, write an equation that describes the shape of the hangar doors. If Luis is 6 feet tall, how
far from either edge of the door should he stand to avoid hitting his head?
6. A satellite dish, like the one shown below, is in the shape of a parabolic surface. Signals
coming from a satellite strike the surface of the dish and are reflected to the focus, where the
receiver is located. The satellite dish shown has a
diameter of 12 feet and a depth of 2 feet. How far from the
base of the dish should the receiver be placed?
