(Template) Nitrogen in Soil, SBA #10

The document outlines a laboratory report for a biology investigation on the effects of nitrogen in soil on plant growth, specifically comparing white sand and garden soil. It includes sections for observations, hypothesis, aim, materials, procedure, expected results, variables, interpretation of results, questions, precautions, limitations, and sources of errors. The report is to be written in the future tense and serves as a guide for conducting the experiment.

Biology SBA #14

Please note:

This laboratory report must be written in the future tense. This SBA is a design
of an investigation but you are not carrying it out. You will write it up in a clear
step by step manner so that another person can follow your clear directions.

Date: 29 January, 2025

Observation:
[This is given by your teacher]
Tia notices that when her mom plants her garden in white sand the plants do not
grow as well as those in the soil in garden outside. Her brother tells her this is
due to lack of nitrogen in white sand.

Hypothesis:
[This statement is a prediction of what you expect will happen during this
investigation, it must be clearly stated, based on the observation, and stated so
that it can be tested.]

Title:
[This is a statement or word on what the experiment is about or linked to]
Nitrogen in soil Plan and Design

Aim:
[This is a statement of what you plan to do relating to the hypothesis. E.g To
investigate, to find out, to test, to observe, to compare..]

Apparatus and materials:

[This is a list of all apparatus and materials to be used in this experiment]
Procedure: [This is a description of the procedure in clear steps. Procedure
should include quantities, conditions and times used during the experiment]

Expected Results: [Include an appropriate table to show how data is to be

collected for this experiment. Be sure to include table titles, correctly labeled
headings and the correct amount of space for each set of data to be collected.]

Variables:
Controlled variable:
This variable states the factors that will remain constant throughout the
experiment.

Manipulated variable
Factors that will be changed during the experiment

Responding variable:
Factors that will change due to the changes done on the manipulated variable

Interpretation of expected results:

This is a short paragraph describing what you would expect the results to be.
Explaining in as much detail, giving background research as to why the results
will turn out like you hypothesized

Questions to answer:
1. Which seedling will grow taller/faster? Is it the one in white sand or in garden
soil?
2. Why will the one you selected above grow faster?
3. What causes growth to start and progress in plants?
4. Why is nitrogen important for growth of plants
5….
Review Section b8 in your textbook especially pages 95-97 in your green text
book, pg 16, etc
Precaution
This is a section stating the different errors that may cause unreliable results. E.g
(1) the plants should be identical: same pots, same size and similar height. They
should be placed next to each other in order to get the same, air, water or
sunlight etc.

Limitations
This is a section stating external factors that may negatively affect the
experiment. E.g weather conditions, humidity, wind, etc

Sources of Errors
This section states some of the unforeseen factors that may cause the results to
be unreliable. E.g the plants die due to lack of other nutrients/ factors not being
investigated.
