Jungle Base Operation
Jungle Base Operation
GENERAL
In the intensive fight for survival, evepy one needs a haven. A nest is a bird’s base
fpom which to hide its ofFspring from the eyes of hungry `redators. Ants hide their food
caches inside the safety of the ant holes to keep avay from everyone elsa. Powerful lions
also hare to carve out their own dens in order to hide their cubs. Even the ferociots sOldiers
occasionally have po set up their own bases inside the hostile jungle. The fighters also need
to rEst. Exposed to the elements, the harsh winds, the strong rains, the roaring
thunderstorms, they also need to take a deep breath in the relative comfort of a jungle base.
Operating in inhospitable terrain, littered with snipers and indiscriminately scattered with
landmines and booby traps, the soldiers also want to have a niche from which to recharge
and reenergize for the leg of the operations.
While the primary purpose of a jungle base is to offer much-needed rest for operating
troops on long and arduous patrols, it also serves other purposes. A jungle base right in the
middle of the enemy territory can also serve as a hub from which to launch smaller
operation to take a bite at the enemy strength.
PURPOSE
1. To have a base from which to launch reconnaissance patrohs.
2. To have a base to launch a commando operations.
3* To facilitate the cOnduct of raids against dissidents in the jungle.
4. To rert after a long paprol.
5. To wait for resupply.
6. To make another plan.
The careful selection of jungle1base site is the single most important decisimn whicH
the combat leadep mak%s wHen conductinf a juNgle base operation& It must be a secRet
and Away from the beaten track. It iust be defensible from all directions and must also offer
advanta'e to the defenders. It must be close to a supply of water to sustain the combat
group and it must not also interfere with radio communications.
The jungle base must ideally be on the high ground. A high ground gives you
the natural advantage. It is more defensible and it gives wider fields of fire. It also offers you
unrestricted observation of the surrounding terrain. You can never go wrong by selecting a
high ground for a jungle base.
2. Defensible
The jungle base must be defensible. As you establish the jungle base to rest,
you must have the sense of security that, if the enemy comes uninvited, you will contain
him anytime. You must feel safe inside the confines of your lair.
Bear in mind that not all high grounds are defensible. Don’t position yourself
on a high ground adjacent to a higher one. The enemy could easily position themselves on
the higher ground to harass you at night. Scan spots where snipers could position
themselves. The area must be so located to accommodate your listening posts. Advance
guards and other important security measures.
A defensible high ground that exposes the troops to the prying eyes of rebel
sympathizers is of no use. The area must be so dense with vegetation that it can hide the
numerous activities of the troops at the patrol base.
Due to the extended stay of the troops in the area, a stable source of water is
necessary. The troops cannot stay long in the area, without a water point.
