1 Coolant level sensor (on expansion tank)

2 Coolant temperature sensor (on front right of the cylinder head)

3 Camshaft position sensor (on the upper timing gear casing)

4 Vacuum sensor (on the clean side of the inlet air filter housing). Available in two variants.
Green variant – Combined vacuum/temperature sensor function. Blue variant – Only with
vacuum sensor function.

5 Charge air pressure and charge air temperature sensor (combination sensor, in the inlet
pipe)

6 Flywheel position and speed sensor (on top of the flywheel housing)

7 Oil pressure sensor (in the main lubricating channel of the cylinder block)

8 Fuel pressure sensor (on the fuel filter housing)

9 Level sensor for the water separator (on the water separator reservoir)

10 Crankcase pressure sensor (in the cylinder block)

Note: The engine is available in two variants, with or without a pressure sensor. On the
variant without a sensor, the sensor is replaced by a plug.

EMS (Engine Management System)

For the EATS (Exhaust Aftertreatment System) sensors, refer to Intake and exhaust system, system
description.
The fuel system is controlled electronically regarding injection quantity and injection timing. This
system is called EMS.
The central part of the system is the ECM (Engine Control Module), which is located on the left side
of the engine and mounted in vibration damping rubber elements. The ECM requires continuous
information from the accelerator pedal and a number of sensors on the engine in order to control the
amount of fuel and the injection timing. The cable connections for the engine sensors have DIN
standard connectors.

Engine protection
There are several systems to protect the engine against major damage.
Power reduction
Power reduction occurs if a fault arises that can damage the engine when running at full power. The
vehicle can be driven to a garage for repair.
Power reduction can also occur when external circumstances affect the engine, driving at high
altitude for example. Output can be reduced at low engine speed to prevent the exhaust temperature
becoming too high. To protect the turbocharger from over revving, power can also be reduced at high
engine speed. This is not a fault and full power is restored when the external circumstances change.
It is normally not necessary to drive the vehicle to a garage for troubleshooting.
Engine shut-down
A forced engine shut-down occurs if the engine speed reaches a level that may damage the engine if
it continues to run or if the crankcase pressure becomes too high, the vehicle must be at standstill. A
DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) is set.
