Probability Assessment - Practice Questions

1. A spinner has 8 equal sections numbered 1 to 8. It is spun 240 times.

How many times would you expect to get:
a) a score of 2
b) a score greater than 5
c) a score that is an even number

Worked Example

2. A red die and a green die are both thrown. Display all the possible outcomes on a
probability space diagram.
a) Complete the diagram.
b) Find the probability of scoring:
i) A total of 9
ii) Less than 6
iii) even number

3. A bag contains 4 yellow balls and 6 purple balls. A ball is drawn and not replaced. Then a
second ball is drawn.
Draw a tree diagram to show all the possible outcomes.

4. A bag contains 7 orange balls (O), 5 black balls (B), and 4 white balls (W).
One ball is randomly selected. Find:
a) P(O)
b) P(O′)
c) P(W)
d) P(B′)

5. A bag contains 7 red marbles and 5 blue marbles.

Two marbles are drawn one after another without replacement.
Draw a tree diagram to show all possible outcomes.

6. A bag has 3 green balls, 4 yellow balls, and 2 white balls.

A ball is taken out at random.
Find:
a) P(Green)
b) P(Yellow)
c) P(White)
d) P(Not Green)

7. A coin is flipped and a die is rolled.

List all the possible outcomes.
Find the probability of getting:
i) Heads and an even number
ii) Tails and a number greater than 4

8. A spinner has 5 equal sections numbered 1 to 5. It is spun 100 times.

How many times would you expect to get:
a) a number greater than 2
b) an odd number

9. A bag has 8 blue, 3 red, and 5 green beads.

One bead is picked at random.
Find:
a) P(Blue)
b) P(Not Red)
c) P(Green or Red)
