HP SLIDER LENS REPLACEMENT

NOTE: Exercise extreme care, optics cleanliness is mandatory. Refer to

Service Procedure 8503-01-0060 for optic cleanliness. Refer to drawing 7121-99-
9200 for specific details.

1. Remove HP Slider from Fiber Delivery System. Place HP Slider on open flat surface.

2. Remove the window first by removing the o-ring that is holding the window in place.
Use tweezers or a pointed object in notch to gently pull the o-ring toward the center of
the window until the o-ring is free from the groove. Turn the HP Slider up-side down
allowing the window to fall out.(If needed, gently tap the side of the slider with your
finger).

3. Loosen the two upper set screws(item 15) from the front lens cartridge of the HP
Slider; removing them is risking losing them. This front portion should slide off the HP
Slider. Slide out the lens(item 9) from this front portion. It may be necessary to
gently but firmly tap the end of the slider on your hand or a book; covered with lens
tissue. Remove the o-ring(item 5) from this front portion of the HP Slider using an
EXACTO knife. Slide the knife down the side of this top portion. Using the point of
the knife to dislodge the o-ring from its groove. Then remove the o-ring from the front
portion of the HP Slider.

4. Loosen the two lower set screws(item 15) not the middle set screws, from the HP
Slider. This rear lens cartridge should slide off the HP Slider.

5. Slide out the lens(item 7) from this center lens cartridge. It may be necessary to
gently but firmly tap the end of the slider on your hand or a book; covered with lens
tissue. Remove the o-ring(item 5) from the center lens cartridge of the HP Slider;
using an EXACTO knife.

6. Loosen the two middle set screws(item 15) from the HP Slider. Slide out the
spacer(item 10) and lens(item 3). It may be necessary to gently but firmly tap the end
of the slider on your hand or a book; covered with lens tissue.

7. Due to its location the remaining o-ring and spacer can remain in the HP Slider. But it
can be removed if needed. Remove the lower o-ring(item 5) from the center lens
cartridge of the HP Slider; using an EXACTO knife. Loosen the four set screws (item
15) from the HP Slider. Remove the small spacer(item 17) from the HP Slider.

8. Examine the lenses for damage. Replace as needed. Replace the o-rings.

REBUILDING THE HP SLIDER

1. Be organized and be aware of cleanliness. See procedure 8503-01-0060 for optic

cleanliness.

2. Rebuild the front lens cartridge of the HP Slider by inserting an o-ring(item 5) into its
groove. Then place the middle lens cartridge in front of you on the bench with the
narrower end up. Balance the thin cylindrical lens(item 9) on top of the assembly with
the curved side down. Being careful not to tip over the stack, lower the front lens
cartridge over the lens. Use the middle lens cartridge to secure the lens in place.
DO NOT push to hard or glass may break.

3. Flip this front lens cartridge over and install the window(item 4) and o-ring(item 5).
Put this front lens cartridge off to the side until later.

4. Rebuild the middle lens cartridge, by inserting the small spacer (item 17) bevel side
up. Make sure spacer does not get hung up when installing in the Slider. Insert thin
o-ring(item 5) using a plastic or wooden rod to seat o-ring. Tighten the four set
screws(item 15) until they just come in contact with the spacer. Do not fully tighten
since these screws will be adjusted later.

5. Position the retainer(item 10) with either end facing up on the bench. Rest spherical
lens(item 8) on the retainer with the flat side on the retainer. Lower the middle lens
cartridge over the lens and retainer.

6. Tip the lens cartridge enough to get the tip of your finger under the retainer. Push on
the retainer to seat the lens onto the o-ring. Flip the assembly over the spacer can
come out but the lens should not. Re-install the retainer(item 15) with the grooved
end facing out. Screw the two middle set screws(item 15) until they just contact the
retainer. With your thumb or finger, apply light pressure to the retainer to seat against
the lens then tighten these two set screws. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN.

7. Install the last o-ring(item 5) into the groove located at the upper edge of the retainer.
Place the rear lens cartridge on the bench in front of you with the threaded end down.
Place the more strongly curved cylindrical lens(item 7), flat surface facing down, onto
the rear lens cartridge. Place the middle lens cartridge over the stack. Gently but
firmly press the tube straight down until it stops. Do not push too hard or glass will
break.

8. Flip the assembly and remove the rear cartridge. Determine if the lens is seated
properly.

9. Insert the rear cartridge to the middle cartridge and screw in set screws lightly.
These set screws will be tighten later.

10. Insert the front cartridge to the middle cartridge and screw in set screws lightly.
These set screws will be tighten later.

11. Install the HP Slider to the fiber delivery system.

ALIGNMENT OF THE HP SLIDER

12. Attach the 3 X 10 mm HP Slider to the fiber. Install the fiber to the laser system. Use
a known good fiber.

13. Put on proper eyewear. Adjust the voltage to get a CP reading of 1 - 2 J/cm2.
Always pulse at least two times at each voltage adjustment, ignoring the first pulse.
When the proper voltage is achieved, remove the 3 X 10 mm HP Slider from the
calport and attach the 3 X 10 mm distance gauge.

14. Use burn paper and the alignment document provided on the last page to look at the
HP Slider alignment. Take a burn shot with the distance gauge on and the HP slider
locked in the HP Delivery system. Adjustments to the HP Slider must be made out of
the HP Delivery System.

15. Slightly loosen the front lens cartridge set screws until the front lens cartridge can
rotate relative to the middle lens cartridge. Rotate the front lens cartridge (only)
slightly and take burn shots until the spot shape looks like the spot picture labeled
‘Optimal’.

16. Tighten front lens cartridge set screws. Check to see that the front lens cartridge will
not rotate relative to the middle lens cartridge. Take a burn shot and check the spot
shape again to make sure the front lens cartridge is still aligned. The spot must look
no worse than that labeled as 2 degrees.

17. Slightly loosen the middle lens cartridge set screws (the pair closest to the fiber.)

18. While the HP Slider is locked in the HP Delivery System, rotate the middle lens
cartridge (the front lens cartridge moves with it) until the spot is aligned with the
notches on the 3 X 10 Distance gauge.

19. Hold front and middle lens cartridges together and tighten middle lens cartridge set
screws. Check that the front and middle lens cartridges will not rotate relative to
each other and take a burn shot to double check the alignment.

TESTING OF THE HP SLIDER TO VERIFY PROPER ASSEMBLY

1. Put on proper eyewear. Use a known good fiber. Adjust the voltage to get a CP
reading of 1 - 2 J/cm2. Always pulse at least two times at each voltage adjustment,
ignoring the first pulse. When the proper voltage is achieved, remove the handpiece
from the calport and attach the 3 X 10 mm distance gauge.

2. Pulse once on a piece of burn paper.

3. The burn must be 9.5 - 10.5 mm long and 2.85 - 3.15 mm wide. The burn should be
centered as well and line up with the notches on the distance gauge.

4. If the burns for the spot sizes are not within specifications; the lenses may not be in
their proper orientation or in their proper order.

5. This must be rectified. Disassemble the HP Slider and reassemble it again. Be very
careful of lens orientation. Repeat the burn test spots, after each building of the
assembly.

ORBIT TESTING OF THE HP SLIDER

4. Set a reference by having the arrow on the HP Slider at 12:00. Pulse the laser onto
burn paper at the same voltage as in the above testing.

5. Note the de-centered burn pattern with respect to the distance gauge and set
reference(arrow on HP Slider). On the side of the slider opposite the direction in
which the spot is de-centered, unscrew the set screw 1/8th turn(or 45 degrees
rotation). It is often easier to perform the X and Y adjustments independently.

6. Screw in the set screw that lies on the same side as the off-center spot(this is the set
screw opposite the one adjusted in the previous step). Use the same 1/8th turn.

7. Rotate the slider 180 degrees. Pulse the laser again. The error should be less now.
Repeat the above steps until the burn spot pattern is centered to the distance gauge.
There must be no clipping of the spot size on the distance gauge.

8. Once the orbit testing is complete calibrate the HP Slider.
