WHAT IS DIGITAL ADVERTISING? WHY DO WE NEED?
Digital advertising is also called Internet marketing. Digital advertising, also called Internet
advertising ("Internet marketing") is when businesses advantages. Internet technologies to
deliver promotional advertisements to consumers. Digital advertising includes promotional
advertisements and messages delivered through email, social media websites, online advertising
on search engines, banner ads on mobile or Web sites and affiliates programs.
It is the best way to reach customers where they spend the vast majority of their time. It also
helps to reach the right people with right message.

ORIGIN & HISTORY OF DIGITAL ADVERTISING (1978 to Present)


The first spam email was sent in 1978. It went out over the ARPAnet (the Internet's precursor) to
400 recipients who were invited to a product presentation of Digital Equipment Corporation's
new line of computers. This email was the brainchild of DEC's marketing manager, Gary
Thuerk, who is now known as the Father of Spam.

BANNER ADS
Clickable banner ads first appeared in 1993 on Global Network Navigator (GNN), a web portal
that featured news and products for sale. Within two years, large brands were paying GNN up to
$11,000 per week for banner ad spots.

KEYWORD ADVERTISING
In 1995, Yahoo® became a wildly successful commercial enterprise. They were, in part, able to
do this by making the decision to sell keyword advertising.

DOUBLECLICK
In 1996, Doubleclick, an online ad agency, revolutionized digital advertising by connecting ad
buyers with websites. They also figured out how to track banner ads and calculate a
buyer’s return on investment.

POP-UP ADS
As web users learned to tune out banner ads, the pop-up ad appeared in the early 2000s. Some
contained advertising materials, while others requested personal info from users. However,
because web users found them annoying, pop-up blockers soon followed.
PAY PER CLICK
Pay per click advertising (also known as PPC) was invented in 1998, but it did not come into
fruition until the mid-2000s. This was, in part, due to Google's® ability to place advertisements
on a webpage based on its relevancy to the content. This development made digital advertising
much more effective.

Social Media Advertising


Today, social media advertising let’s online marketing teams target users based on their likes,
dislikes, location, age, and other relevant information. Although it is currently the most popular
form of digital advertising, it is merely the latest evolution in the ever-changing advertising
landscape.

TYPES OF DIGITAL ADVERTISING


DISPLAY ADS

Display ads refer to visual advertising. This includes images, text, banners, wallpapers, popup
