Please read the following instructions for writing your assignments. (AD, BS,
B.Ed., MA/MSc, M.Ed., (ODL. Mode).
1. All questions are compulsory and carry equal marks but within a question, the
marks are distributed according to its requirements.
2. Read the question carefully and then answer it according to the requirements
of the questions.
3. Avoid irrelevant discussion/information and reproducing from books, study
guides, or allied material.
4. Handwritten scanned assignments are not acceptable.
5. Upload your typed (in Word or PDF format) assignments on or before the due
date.
6. Your own analysis and synthesis will be appreciated.
7. Late assignments can't be uploaded to LMS.
8. The students who attempt their assignments in Urdu/Arabic may upload a
scanned copy of their handwritten assignments (in PDF format) on University
LMS. The size of the file should not exceed 5 MB

ASSIGNMENT No. 1

Q.1 Discuss in detail various challenges and/or complexities involved in the


study of the ‘meaning’ of words, phrases, or sentences in a language with
suitable examples. (20)
Q.2 What is the difference between an utterance and a proposition? Also,
demonstrate with the help of at least five utterances from everyday
conversations which may not have cohesive devices, but nevertheless
illocutionary force can be derived for propositional development. (20)

Q.3 What is the relevance of semantics in decoding the ‘meaning’ of the under
mentioned sentences which seem to be either contradictory or nonsensical in
nature? (20)
a) Lahore is Lahore.
b) We strive to do the impossible.
c) Boredom is killing me.
d) It is an open secret now.
e) It was the best of times; it was the worst of times.

Q.4 What are performatives? Draw the distinction between implicit and explicit
performatives in the light of Austin’s Speech Act theory. Also, discuss the
significance of felicity conditions in performative utterances. (20)
Q.5 Discuss the significance of discourse analysis in language teaching with
particular reference to communicative syllabus design. (20)

ASSIGNMENT No. 2
(Project)

This assignment is based on a research-oriented activity. You are required to study the
relevant field extensively, conduct research and prepare a brief report on your findings.
You may consult your resource person/tutor for guidance in case of any difficulty.

Conduct your research on any of the following two specialized fields.


Prosodic and paralinguistic features of spoken utterances are critical in modulating and
punctuating the process of construction of meaning. You are required to analyze the
impact of these features in making spoken utterances intelligible. For this purpose, select
a suitable talk exchange, of 10 to 15 minutes’ duration, from the electronic media of
Pakistan. You may download the video from the channel’s website (if the option exists)
to transcribe the data by following transcription conventions for an in depth and detailed
study.
OR

Apply Austin’s Speech Act Theory to an ordinary workplace conversation. You are
required to seek informed consent from the participants of the conversation for
audio/video recording of the conversation. Analyze the nature and frequency of
locutionary, illocutionary and perlocutionary speech acts performed during the
conversation.
