MTRN3210 - 2025 - Lab - Week - 8 (PDF - Io)

The document outlines a pre-lab activity focused on analyzing a first-order system represented by the transfer function G(s) = 1/(τ s + 1). It includes tasks to demonstrate that the magnitude at the cutoff frequency is -3 dB, to find the angle of G(jω) at this frequency, and to calculate the corresponding frequency for a given τ value that results in a -45 degree phase shift in the output. The activity is structured to enhance understanding of Bode diagrams and system response characteristics.

Week 8 Pre-lab Activity

Consider a first-order system

G(s) = 1/(τ s + 1) (2)

where τ is a positive constant. The magnitude of G(jω) is obtained as |G(jω)| = 1/ τ 2 ω 2 + 1.

1. Using the above magnitude equation, show that the magnitude of G(jω) at the cutoff
frequency (which is a frequency where the slope of the Bode diagram asymptotes
change) is −3 dB. (0.4 marks)

2. Find the angle of G(jω) and show that at the cutoff frequency, the angle is equal to
−45 degrees.(0.3 marks)

3. Suppose τ = 0.1. Find the frequency (in Hertz) corresponding to the angler frequency
ω = 2πf (in radians per second) of the sinusoidal input signal sin(ωt) which, when
applied to the system G(s), generates a steady-state sinusoidal output with a phase
angle shift of −45◦ . (0.3 marks)
