4.0 BASIS AND ASSUMPTIONS

4.1 The source of damage is considered as S1 (flashes to a structure) only.

4.2 The type of damage is considered as D1 and D2 (i.e. injury to living being by electric shock and physical
damage).

4.3 Based on Table-1 of IEC 62305-2 for source of damage (S1) and type of damage (D1 and D2), the type of loss
considered is L1.

4.4 The assessment of lightning protection is carried out based on risk R1 which is relevant to type of loss L1.

LIGHTNING PROTECTION CALCULATIONS

5.0 RISK EVALUATION

5.1 Following are the terms and definitions used in these calculations of R1 as per IEC 62305-2:

R1 = Risk of loss of human life in a structure

RT = Tolerable risk

RA1 = Risk component related to injury to living beings by electric shock (D1) - (flashes to
structure)

RB1 = Risk component related to physical damage (D2) - (flashes to structure)

ND = Number of dangerous events per annum

PA1 = Probability of damage to structure related to injury to living beings by electric shock (D1)
- (flashes to structure)

PB1 = Probability of damage to structure related to physical damage (D2) - (flashes to

structure – as per Table B.2)

LA1 = Consequent loss related to injury to living beings by electric shock (D1) - (flashes to
structure)

LB1 = Consequent loss related to physical damage (D2) - (flashes to structure)

TD = Number of thunderstorm days per year

NG = Lightning ground flash density (1/km2 x year)

AD = Collection area for flashes to an isolated structure (m2)

CD = Location factor of the structure (as per Table A.1)

PTA = Probability reducing PA1 Value depends on additional protection measures against touch
and step voltages (as per Table B.1)

LT = Typical mean numbers of victim injured by electric shock (D1) due to one dangerous event
(as per Table C.2)

LF = Typical mean numbers of victim injured by physical damage (D2) due to one dangerous
event (as per Table C.2)

LO = The typical mean relative numbers of victims by failure of internal systems (D3) due to one
dangerous event (see Table C.2) = 10-3

rt = Factor reducing the loss of human life depending on type of soil or floor ((as per Table C.3)

rp = Factor reducing the loss due to physical damage depending on the provisions taken to
reduce the consequences of fire (as per Table C.4)

rf = Factor reducing the loss due to physical damage depending on the risk of fire or the risk of
explosion of the structure (as per Table C.5)

15963-000-EL-CAL-0010Rev :0 Page 7 of 27
LIGHTNING PROTECTION CALCULATIONS

hz = Factor increasing the relative amount of loss due to physical damage when special hazard
is present (as per Table C.6)

nz = Expected Number of persons in the zone

nt = Total number of persons in the structure

tz = Time in hours per year for which the persons are present in the zone

Hence R1 is calculated as follows

R1 = RA1 + RB1 (based on source and type of damage)

where

RA1 = ND x PA1 x LA1

RB1 = ND x PB1 x LB1

NG ≈ 0.1 x TD

ND = NG X AD X CD X 10-6

PA1 = PTA x PB1

LA1 = rt x LT x nz / nt x tz / 8760

LB1 = rp x rf x hz x LF x nz / nt x tz / 8760

According to clause 5.4 of IEC 62305-2:

"If R < RT, lightning protection is not necessary. If R > RT, protection measures shall be adopted in order to
reduce R < RT for all risks to which the structure is subjected”

As per Table-4 of IEC 62305-2, the tolerable risk (RT) is considered as 10-5 which is applicable for type of loss
L1. Following steps are followed for risk evaluation:

1. Identification of the components RX which makes up the risk i.e. RA1 and RB1

2. Calculation of the identified risk components R X i.e. RA1 and RB1

3. Calculation of the total risk R i.e. R1

4. Identification of the tolerable risk RT

5. Comparison of the risk R1 with the tolerable value RT.

AD = Collection area of the structure (m2)

For a rectangular shape building the Collection area is given as follows:

2
AD = L x W + 2 x (3 x H x L) + 2 x (3 x H x W) + π x (3 x H) (as per Eq. A.2 of IEC 62305-2)

AD = (45 x 18.6) + (2 x 3 x 10 x 45) + (2 x 3 x 10 x 18.6) + (π x (3 x 10)2)  7480.44 m2

= 1.94 x 10-5

RT = 10-5

Since R1 > RT lightning protection is required.

By providing the Air termination system as per Class of LPS-IV, the risk factor is recalculated and the risks can
be recalculated.

PTA = Value depends on additional protection measures against touch and step voltages (as per Table
B.1) = 1

PB1 = Value depends on lightning protection level (as per Table B.2) = 0.2

PSPD = Value depends on lightning protection level (as per Table B.3) = 0.05

rt = Factor reducing the loss of human life depending on type of soil or floor (as per Table C.3) = 10 -2

rp = Factor reducing the loss due to physical damage depending on the provisions taken to reduce the

rf = Factor reducing the loss due to physical damage depending on the risk of fire on the risk of

Hence putting above values in equations

LA1 = rt x LT x nz / nt x tz / 8760

LC1 = LO x nz / nt x tz / 8760

RC1 = ND x PC1 x LC1

LIGHTNING PROTECTION CALCULATIONS

= 2.99 x 10-7 + 5.98 x 10-7 + 7.48 x 10-7

= 16.45 x 10-7

= 0.165 x 10-5

RT = 10-5

Since R1 < RT, hence Class-IV lightning protection provided is adequate.

Similar procedure is adopted for other buildings and risk evaluation is attached in Appendix-2.

6.2 Sheds

Similar procedure is as per clause 6.1 above adopted for metallic sheds risk evaluation and is attached in
Appendix-3. Metallic sheds (structure and metal roof) are not considered as air termination and down
conductor system.

6.3 Length of Earth Electrode

For lightning protection of building, sheds and structures, vertical earth electrodes shall be installed and
connected to down conductors directly through test link. This is Type-A arrangement of earth electrodes for
earth-termination system. The required minimum length of earth electrode for lightning protection shall be
as per clause 5.4.2.1 in IEC 62305-3.

The required minimum length of vertical earth electrode for any class of Lightning Protection

I2 = l1 * 0.5

l1 = 5 (from figure-3 in IEC 62305-3)

l2 = 5 * 0.5 = 2.5m

Thus 3m length earth electrode (safety earthing network) is recommended for lightning protection.

7.0 CALCULATION RESULTS

7.1 The risk assessment calculations are performed for each building in compliance with IEC 62305‐2. Risk factors
are calculated and compared with the tolerable risk value. Results are tabulated in the following table.

LIGHTNING PROTECTION CALCULATIONS

Note 1: Regardless of the outcome of risk assessment Class IV lightning protection system (LPS) is
provided in line with OISD 180 clause 6.1.1 & 6.1.2.
Note 2: Structure is considered as protected without employing any Lightning protection measures
based on calculated risk is less than the tolerable risk.

7.2 Based on LPS Class-IV level, Mesh of maximum 20m x 20m size is selected for horizontal air termination as
per IEC 62305-Part 3. Down conductors are spaced at Maximum 20m intervals of the building periphery or 2
nos. minimum down conductors for each building. 25mm x 3mm Galvanised steel material is considered for
both air termination and down conductors.

Note 1: Since Effective resistance of Lightning system grid is higher than 10 Ω , other means (such as Deep
well or Soil enrichment) are needs to be considered to bring effective resistance of lightning
system grid below 10 Ω.
