This British Standard was published by BSI. It is the UK implementation of

EN ISO 3744:1995. It is identical with ISO 3744:1994. In 1995 the European
Committee for Standardization (CEN) accepted ISO 3744:1994 as European
Standard EN ISO 3744:1995. As a consequence of implementing the European
Standard this British Standard is renumbered as BS EN ISO 3744 and any
reference to BS ISO 3744 should be read as a reference to BS EN ISO 3744.
The UK participation in its preparation was entrusted to Technical Committee
EH/1, Acoustics.
A list of organizations represented on this committee can be obtained on
request to its secretary.
This publication does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a
contract. Users are responsible for its correct application.

Foreword
The text of the International Standard from ISO/TC 43,
Acoustics, of the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) has been taken over as a
European Standard by the Technical Committee
CEN/TC 211, Acoustics.
This European Standard shall be given the status of a
national standard, either by publication of an identical
text or by endorsement, at the latest by March 1996,
and conflicting national standards shall be withdrawn
at the latest by March 1996.
This European Standard has been prepared under a
mandate given to CEN by the European Commission
and the European Free Trade Association, and
supports essential requirements of EC Directive(s).
According to the CEN/CENELEC Internal Regulations,
the following countries are bound to implement this
European Standard: Austria, Belgium, Denmark,
Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland,
Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal,
Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and United Kingdom.

Guidelines for the determination of the directivity index

The directivity index in the direction of microphone where

position i, DIi, in decibels, is defined for a Lpi* is the sound pressure level at microphone
hemispherical measurement surface by the position i, corrected for background noise;
following equation:
DI = Lpi* − L⎯⎯p* . . .(E.1) L⎯⎯p* is the sound pressure level averaged over
the measurement surface, corrected for
background noise.
