The document is an assignment for Circuit Theory (Phy301) with three questions focusing on calculating equivalent resistance and voltage/current using circuit analysis techniques. It includes detailed step-by-step solutions for each question, emphasizing the importance of showing calculations and circuit diagrams for maximum marks. Additionally, it explains why a wire connected directly to a voltage source heats up more than one connected through a resistor.

Assignment 1 (Spring 2025)

Circuit Theory (Phy301)

Marks: 20
Due Date: May 02, 2025

Q.1:

Find the equivalent resistance across A and B, of given circuit network. Write each
step of the calculation to get maximum marks. Draw the circuit diagram of each step
otherwise you will lose your marks. (can use electronic work bench to verify Q.1, 2) [Marks:10]

SOLUTION

1-STEP

The 5Ω resistor and 7Ω resistor are in series Let equivalent resistance is

Rseries =

R=5Ω + 7Ω =12Ω
2-STEP

The 12Ω and 4Ω resistors are in parallel then equivalent resistance is

12× 4 48
R12,4 = 12+ 4 = 16
= 3Ω

3-STEP

The 3Ω || 3Ω then equivalent resistance is

3× 3
R3,3 = 3+3 = 96 = 1.5Ω
4-STEP

The 1.5Ω and the 12Ω are in series Let equivalent resistance is

R1.5,12 = 1.5Ω +¿12Ω =13.5Ω

5-STEP

The 13.5Ω || 4Ω then equivalent resistance is

13.5× 4 54
R13.5,4 = 13.5+ 4 = 17.5
= 3.086Ω
6-STEP

The 3.086Ω || 6Ω then equivalent resistance is

3.086 ×6 18.6
R3.086,4 = 3.086+ 6 = 9.086
= 2.04Ω

Final-STEP

The 2.04Ω and the 12Ω resistor are in series Let equivalent resistance is

R2.04,12 = 2.04Ω +¿ 12Ω =14.04Ω

Q.2:
Using division rule calculate the voltage Vo & current I of resistors. Write each step
of the calculation to get maximum marks and also mention units. [Marks=6]

Solution
Formula = V = R/RT × VT

For Vₒ

20KΩ || 5KΩ

Voltages are same in parallel resistance So circuit Becomes

Type equation here .

Total Resistance R = 20 kΩ +¿ 10kΩ = 30 kΩ

By division rule Voltage across 20 kΩ

V=R/RT × VT

20 kΩ
Vₒ = 30 kΩ 30
×

Vₒ = 20kΩ

Now For: I

1-STEP

20kΩ in series of 10kΩ

20kΩ +¿ 10kΩ = 30kΩ

2-STEP

30kΩ || 5kΩ

30× 5 150
Re = 30+5 = 35 = 4.29 KΩ
I = V/R
I=30 /4.29
I=7 mA

3-STEP

Now current across 10kΩ

I =IS × R2/(R1 + R2) BY Step1

I = 7mA × 5/(5+30) = 1mA

Hence I = 1mA

Q.3:
Two identical wires are connected across a voltage source: one through a resistor, one
directly. Which wire heats up more and why? [Marks=4]

Solution

The wire connected directly to the voltage source heats up more.

Reason:

 Without a resistor, the current flowing is very high (almost infinite

depending on internal resistance).
 Power dissipated (heat generated) is given by: P=I2R
 Since (I) is very high for the direct connection, the power (heat) is also
very high.
 The wire may even burn if current exceeds safe limits.
Thus, the wire without resistor heats up more.
