Assignment: Week 2- How to Address Gun Violence in Schools/Among Teens

Gun violence in the United States has become a prevalent social issue, especially

among adolescent in the school setting. It is quite alarming and does raises questions about

the level of violence teens are exposed to and if they are struggling to cope with and

effectively adapt to the many changes that come with pubescence. What is even more

concerning is that while shooting at school exposed students to violence and trauma, it is

often perpetrated by their peers. In recent years, the school environment which was always

promoted as a safe place for children has now become violent and the use of retaliation to

resolve conflicts between students, teachers and parents has heightened.

Gun violence not only needs to be addressed in schools but also on a national level.

Much of the violence carried out by way of guns in this country is partly due to a national

failure to restrict the access and use of guns by most individuals. Anyone can own a gun and

hardly any precautions are taken to prevent such a dangerous weapon from falling into the

wrong hands. Sheehan (2023) that in addressing gun violence, the government needs to

promote safe gun storage through legislation. The Bloomberg School of Public Health at John

Hopkins University shares that to prevent children and other persons in the home from

accessing firearms, they should be locked, unloaded and store in a safe box with a

combination known only to the other and the ammunition stored be secured and stored
separately (n.d). This allows them to be out of the reach of children and decreases the

possibility of it being used accidentally, inappropriately or destructively.

Sheehan also proposed that gun ownership should require a license and training and

background checks should be made on individuals purchasing arms(2023). It significantly

endangers public safety if everyone including the mentally/emotionally unstable, ex-convicts

and offenders and well as individuals prone to violence are freely allowed to own guns. Some

restriction and regulation in needed. For in- school solutions, the implementation of

intervention programs is a good initiative. Support children socially, mentally, emotionally

and cognitively can assist them in working through and dealing with their emotions and

conflicts. School facilitator may also need to report students who display immense signs of

violence to the appropriate authorities and recommend mental health services for such

individuals. School can also partner with other community stakeholders to educate students

about how the use and operation of a firearm endangers both their safety and the public’s.
