Theatre Design Task: Group Worksheets & Scripts for Scene Design

Scene 1: The Last Letter

Short Script:

The stage is dimly lit. A table and chair sit centre stage. A large portrait of a soldier hangs
upstage. An elderly woman enters slowly, holding a candle and a sealed letter.

WOMAN: (Softly, to herself) It came today. His last letter... (She sits and opens it carefully.)

(Reading) "Dear Mama, if this reaches you, I want you to know that I was not afraid. I saw the
sky today. It was blue. I thought of home. I thought of your laugh."

(She wipes a tear, continues.) "They say we go in at dawn. But know this — I have lived a full
life because I was your son."

(She folds the letter, rises slowly, places it beneath the portrait, and exits.)

Group Worksheet – Scene 1: The Last Letter

 Lighting Design:
o What colour and intensity of lighting will create a mood of
memory and loss?
o Where should the lights be positioned?
 Sound Design:
o What ambient or background sounds might you include (e.g.,
distant wind, war sounds, soft music)?
 Set Design:
o Describe the look and style of the stage.
o What minimal set elements are needed?
 Costume/Makeup Design:
o What should the woman wear?
o How can her makeup show age and emotion?
 Props Design:
o List and describe the candle, the letter, and the soldier’s portrait.

Scene 2: Shadows in the Gallery

Short Script:
An abstract art gallery. White plinths stand in sharp lighting. Two masked figures sneak in,
miming exaggerated stealth. They search the stage.

THIEF 1: Keep your eyes peeled. That sculpture’s worth a fortune.

THIEF 2: (Whispering) Let’s be quick. I’ve got a bad feeling...

A sudden gust of sound. A cloaked figure (The Ghost) appears behind them. The thieves freeze.

THIEF 1: Who’s there?

GHOST: (Whispering) You steal what you do not understand. Art lives. And it remembers.

Lights flicker. The thieves scream and flee. The Ghost vanishes.

Scene 3: The Crown's Weight

Short Script:

A throne room with raised platforms and banners. A golden crown sits on a pedestal. Three
nobles argue. The young heir stands aside, silent.

NOBLE 1: He is too young. Too soft. We need a warrior, not a dreamer!

NOBLE 2: He is the King’s blood. That is enough.

HEIR: (Stepping forward) Enough! You squabble like rats. This crown was not mine to choose
— but it is mine to wear. Let history judge me.

He walks to the pedestal, lifts the crown, and places it on his head.

Her father enters with a suitcase.

GIRL: You always leave. Always. What’s so hard about staying?

FATHER: (Sighs) It’s not about you. Life... it pulls me.

GIRL: Then stop letting it.

A long silence. A train rushes by (sound and lights). He puts the suitcase down.

FATHER: Maybe I will. This time.
