Basic Electricity Lab Report

The lab report outlines an experiment aimed at determining the resistance values of carbon composition resistors using the color code and validating these values with a digital ohmmeter. It details the procedure for selecting resistors, measuring their resistance, and calculating accuracy and error percentages. The results confirmed that the color code system is a reliable method for estimating resistance values, with measured values aligning closely with nominal values within acceptable tolerance limits.

Determining Resistance Values of Resistors by Color Code and Measurement

Introduction
01

Objective
Determine resistance values using color code
The primary objective of this experiment is to accurately determine the resistance
values of carbon composition resistors by applying the standard resistor color code.
Each resistor has color bands that indicate its nominal resistance value, which can
be calculated using a specific methodology.
Verify values with digital
ohmmeter

• After calculating the theoretical resistance values using the color

code, the next step is to validate these values through empirical
measurements. Using a digital ohmmeter, the actual resistance of
each selected resistor is measured. This immediate feedback allows
for the assessment of measurement accuracy and helps identify any
discrepancies between calculated and measured values.
Calculate measurement accuracy and error
In this experiment, the accuracy of measurements is calculated using the formulas:
Accuracy (%) = [(Measured - Nominal) / Nominal] × 100 and Error (%) = |Measured
- Nominal| / Nominal × 100. By applying these calculations, we can determine how
closely the measured resistance values align with the expected nominal values,
allowing for a thorough assessment of measurement precision.

Procedure
Select resistors and identify color bands
The first step in the procedure involves randomly selecting three carbon
composition resistors. Each resistor has a color code consisting of several colored
bands that indicate its resistance value. To begin, the color bands need to be
observed and decoded using a standard resistor color code chart, which aids in
confirming the nominal resistance value for each resistor.
Measure resistance with
ohmmeter

• After identifying the color bands and determining the nominal

resistance of each resistor, the next step is to measure the actual
resistance using a digital ohmmeter. The multimeter should be
properly calibrated and set to the resistance measurement mode.
Each resistor is connected to the ohmmeter's leads, and the
readings are recorded for comparison with the nominal values
determined previously.
Calculate accuracy and percentage error
Once the measurements have been taken, the next task is to calculate the accuracy
and percentage error for each resistor. This involves applying the formulas for
accuracy and error based on the nominal and measured resistance values.
Understanding the percentage error helps to gauge the reliability of the
measurements and ensures that the methodologies used provide valid results.
Conclusions

• The experiment successfully demonstrated that the resistor color

code system serves as a reliable method for estimating resistance
values. The measured resistance closely corresponded with the
nominal values, with the percentage error remaining within the
accepted tolerance limits for resistors. The analysis confirms the
effectiveness of both theoretical calculations and practical
measurement techniques in an educational lab setting.
