DEMONSTRATION TEACHING

I.CURRICULUM CONTENT, STANDARDS, AND LESSON COMPETENCIES

A. Content Standards Familiarity and proper use of a compound microscope are essential to
observe cells.
B. Performance Standards By the end of the Quarter, learners demonstrate understanding of the parts
and function of a compound microscope and use this to identify cell
structure.
C. Learning Identify the parts and functions , and demonstrate proper handling and
Competencies/Objectives storing of a compound microscope
a. identify the parts of a compound microscope;
b. describe the function of a compound microscope;
c. classify the parts of a compound microscope as illuminating, magnifying
and mechanical; and
c. demonstrate proper handling and storing of a compound microscope
D. Content Science equipment: The Compound Microscope

E. Integration Utilization of Microscope in investigating microorganisms and their roles in

an ecosystem.
II. LEARNING RESOURCES

Classroom Management
Checking of Attendance
Short Review/Elicit
The teacher facilitates the activity, “Pass the cabbage”
•The teacher activity requires some upbeat music to be played. When the
music starts, the cabbage will be passed on from one student to another,
when the music stops, the student holding the cabbage will peel one layer of
it to reveal the question.

B. Establishing the Purpose of the Motivation/Engagement Activity

lesson The teacher will present photographs of different miniature living
organisms.
The students will identify the organisms and they will identify the mystery
object that links all the photographs presented.
The “mystery object” is commonly used to study the different pictures in the
illustration.
Guide Questions:
1. What is common among all the pictures presented?
2. What is the relationship between the pictures and the “mystery object”?
3. Who usually uses the mystery object?

Unlocking Content Area Vocabulary and Important Words to Facilitate

Learning
 Eyepiece-it is where the observer looks into.
 Arm-portion of microscope that connects the body to the base.
 Stage clips-clips on top of the stage that allow you to secure the
specimen or slide.
 Coarse Adjustment Knob
 Fine Adjustment Knob
-Moves the optic tube up and down to focus on the specimen
 Draw Tube/telescope barrier- part that extends or retracts to adjust
the focal length or magnification
 Revolving Nosepiece-a portion of microscope that allows you to
switch back and forth between lens powers.
 Objective/lenses-lens at the end of a microscope nearest the object.
 Stage-a flatform on top of the base of the microscope which
specimen are placed.
 Iris Diaphragm-allow the light to settle onto slide
 Illuminator-light source
 Base-a stable bottom for the microscope to stand upright

C. Developing and Deepening TASK AND THOUGHT

Understanding Exploration and Explanation
The Microscope Anatomy
The teacher will group the class into four. Each group will identify the parts
of the microscope by labelling the parts of it on a Manila Paper. The teacher
will give them five minutes to do the activity.

Identify the Parts

Write the parts of the microscope in the corresponding number

1 7
2 8
3 9
4 10
5 11
6 12

Elaboration and Extended

Parts and Function : Do I know You?
By exploring the microscope , each group will identify the function of each
part and will classify as illuminating, magnifying and mechanical. Write your
answers on a Manila Paper. The teacher will give them another five minutes
to do the activity.

GROUP 1 GROUP 3

High Power Objective Arm
Low Power Objective Body Tube
GROUP 2 GROUP 4

Guide Questions:
1. Identify whether the parts /components given to you are mechanical,
illuminating, and magnifying. Explain why.
2. Does every component play a crucial part in the compound’s microscope’s
overall operation?
3. If a component of a compound microscope is damaged, what will
happen?
4. What will you do as a student to keep the microscope operating properly?

D. Making Generalization ABSTRACTION

Elaboration/Explanation
The teacher will facilitate learning by using actual microscope to teach the
students the parts and functions of the microscope and how the microscope
works.
The teacher will present a video entitled “ How to Use a Microscope”.
While the teacher is presenting the video, she will make sure that her
students will pay attention.
Reflection on Learning (Metacognition)
The teacher will let the students watch a video presentation about
microscope.
The teacher will ask the importance of Microscope and will inculcate in them
the value of appreciating the efforts of those who first invented the
microscope and its capacity to enable us to discover the wonders of the
world around us.
The teacher will facilitate a game-based generalization. (Peeling a cabbage)

E. EVALUATING LEARNING Evaluation

 The teacher will facilitate a game-based formative assessment.
 The students will outline the steps on how to use the microscope.
