Worksheet 2

Name Class Date

1
A Projecting the image
Bright light is shone onto the image and
the light reflects off the white areas onto
the charged drum. This reflected light
causes the area of the drum it lands on to
become discharged.
This leaves a charge pattern on the drum
which matches the original image.

B Creating a permanent image

The toner powder on the sheet of paper is
heated. This causes it to melt into the
paper, creating a permanent image.

C Attracting the toner

A clean piece of paper is passed over the
roller. The toner is transferred from the
drum to the paper, sticking to it.
The sheet of paper now has an image
which is the same as the original.

D The glass plate and drum

The page to be copied is moved onto the
top surface of a glass plate.
A cylindrical drum is positively charged to
that the complete surface is evenly
charged.

E The structure of a photocopier

A photocopier is designed to make
identical copies of an image on sheets of
paper. It uses a drum which can be
electrically charged and then discharged
using light.

F Coloured images
To produce coloured images, coloured
light can be used along with different
colours of toner powder.

G The toner
A black toner powder is sprayed onto the
drum. This toner is attracted to positive
charge and so sticks onto the drum.
This has created an image on the drum
which matches the original.
