 A pole has to be erected at a point on the boundary of a circular park of diameter

20 metres in such a way that the difference of its distances from two
diametrically opposite fixed gates A and B on the boundary is 4 metres. Is it
possible to do so? If answer is yes, at what distance from the two gates should
the pole be erected?
 A passenger, while boarding the plane slipped from the stairs and got hurt. The
pilot took the passenger in the emergency clinic at the airport for treatment. Due
to this plane delayed by half an hour. To reach destination 1500km away in time
so that the passengers could catch the connecting flight, the speed of plane was
increased by 250 km/hr than the usual speed. Find the usual speed of the plane.

Ch5.Arithmetic Progression
 A man arranges to pay off a debt of Rs 3600 by 40 annual installments which
form an arithmetic series. When 30 of the instalments are paid, he dies
leaving one-third of the debt unpaid, find the value of the first installment.
 There are 25 trees at equal distances of 5m in a line with a well, the distance
of the well from the nearest tree being 10m. A gardener waters all the trees
separately starting from the well and he returns to the well after watering
each tree to get water for the next. Find the total distance the gardener will
cover in order to water all the trees.
 A man is employed to count Rs 10710. He counts at the rate of Rs 180 per
minute for half an hour. After this he counts at the rate of Rs 3 less every
minute than the preceding minute. Find the time taken by him to count the
entire amount.
 A sum of Rs 700 is to be used to give seven cash prizes to students of a
school for their overall academic performances. If each price is Rs 20 less
than its preceding prize, find the value of each prize.
 Ramkali saved Rs 5 in the first week of a year and then increased her
weekly saving by Rs 1.75. If in the nth week, her weekly savings
become Rs 20.75, find n.
 The houses of a row are numbered consecutively from 1 to 49. Show
that there is a value of x such that the sum of the numbers of the
houses preceding the house numbered x is equal to the sum of the
numbers of the houses following it. Find this value of x. [Hint : Sx-1 =
S49 – Sx ]
 Ravi starts a job with a monthly salary of ₹15,000. Every year, his
salary increases by ₹1,200. What will his salary be in the 10th year?
 A book has chapters with pages in arithmetic progression. The first
chapter has 5 pages, the second has 9, the third has 13, and so on.
How many pages are there in the 8th chapter?
 A student decides to save ₹10 in the first week, ₹15 in the second
week, ₹20 in the third, and so on. How much will the student save in
total after 12 weeks?
 A speaker gives lectures of increasing lengths: the first is 30
minutes, the second is 35, the third is 40, and so on. How long is the
9th lecture?
 In a stadium, there are 25 rows of seats. The first row has 20 seats,
and each successive row has 4 more seats than the previous one.
(a) How many seats are there in the 25th row?
(b) Find the total number of seats in the stadium.
 A boy starts saving Rs 50 in the first month and increases his savings
by Rs 25 each month.
(a) How much will he save in the 10th month?
(b) How much will he save in total over the first 12 months?
 A person climbs a staircase where the height of each step forms an
arithmetic progression. The first step is 8 cm high, and each step is
0.5 cm higher than the previous one.
(a) What is the height of the 20th step?
(b) What is the total height climbed after 20 steps?

* A contract on construction job specifies a penalty for delay of completion

beyond a certain date as follows: Rs 200 for the first day, Rs 250 for the second
day, Rs 300 for the third day, etc., the penalty for each succeeding day being Rs 50
more than for the preceding day. How much money the contractor has to pay as
penalty, if he has delayed the work by 30 days?
* A sum of Rs 700 is to be used to give seven cash prizes to students of a
school for their overall academic performance. If each prize is Rs 20 less than its
preceding prize, find the value of each of the prizes.
* In a school, students thought of planting trees in and around the school to
reduce air pollution. It was decided that the number of trees, that each section of
each class will plant, will be the same as the class, in which they are studying, e.g.,
a section of Class I will plant 1 tree, a section of Class II will plant 2 trees and so on
till Class XII. There are three sections of each class. How many trees will be planted
by the students?
* A spiral is made up of successive semicircles, with centres alternately at A
and B, starting with centre at A, of radii 0.5 cm, 1.0 cm, 1.5 cm, 2.0 cm, . . . as
shown in Fig. 5.4. What is the total length of such a spiral made up of thirteen
consecutive semicircles? (Take  = 22/7 ).
* 200 logs are stacked in the following manner: 20 logs in the bottom row, 19
in the next row, 18 in the row next to it and so on .In how many rows are the 200
logs placed and how many logs are in the top row?
* In a potato race, a bucket is placed at the starting point, which is 5 m from
the first potato, and the other potatoes are placed 3 m apart in a straight line. There
are ten potatoes in the line. A competitor starts from the bucket, picks up the
nearest potato, runs back with it, drops it in the bucket, runs back to pick up the
next potato, runs to the bucket to drop it in, and she continues in the same way
until all the potatoes are in the bucket. What is the total distance the competitor
has to run? [Hint : To pick up the first potato and the second potato, the total
distance (in metres) run by a competitor is 2 × 5 + 2 × (5 + 3)].
* A ladder has rungs 25 cm apart. The rungs decrease uniformly in length from
45 cm at the bottom to 25 cm at the top. If the top and the bottom rungs are 1 2 2
m apart, what is the length of the wood required for the rungs?
* A small terrace at a football ground comprises of 15 steps each of which is 50
m long and built of solid concrete. Each step has a rise of 1/4 m and a tread of 1/2
m. Calculate the total volume of concrete required to build the terrace.
