COMPLEX ANALYSIS
ASSIGNMENT–1

Notation: D = {z ∈ C : |z| < 1}.

(1) Prove the following:

(a) Prove that |z| ≤ |Re (z)| + |Im(z)| ≤ 2 |z|.
(b) |z1 + z2 | ≤ |z1 | + |z2 | and equality holds if and only if one is a nonnegative
(real) scalar multiple of the other.
z1 − z2
(c) If either |z1 | = 1 or |z2 | = 1, but not both, then prove that = 1.
1 − z1 z2
What exception must be made for the validity of the above equality when
|z1 | = |z2 | = 1?
(2) Show that the equation z 4 + z + 5 = 0 has no solution in the set {z ∈ C : |
z |< 1}.
(3) If z and w are in C such that Im(z) > 0 and Im(w) > 0, show that | z−w z−w
|< 1.
(4) when does az + bz + c = 0 has exactly one solution?
(5) If 1 = z0 , z1 , . . . , zn−1 are distinct nth roots of unity, prove that Πn−1
j=1 (z − zj ) =
Pn−1 j
j=0 z .
(6) For each of the following subsets of C, determine whether it is open, closed or
neither. Justify your answers.
(a) A1 = {z ∈ C : Re(z) = 1 and Im(z) 6= 4}
(b) A2 = B(1, 1) ∪ B(2, 21 ) ∪ B(3, 13 )
z−1

(c) A3 = z ∈ C : z+1 =2
(d) A4 = {z ∈ C : sin (Re(z)) < Im(z) < 1}
(7) For each of the following subsets of C, determine their interior, exterior and
boundary:
(a) S1 = {z ∈ C : |z| < 1 and Im(z) 6= 0} ∪ {z ∈ C : |z| > 1 and Im(z) = 0}
(b) S2 = r cos n1 + i sin n1 ∈ C : r > 0, n ∈ N ∪ {z ∈ C : Re(z) < 0}

(8) Use − δ definition to prove that

3z 4 − 2z 3 + 8z 2 − 2z + 5
lim = 4(1 + i).
z→i z−i
3z 4 − 2z 3 + 8z 2 − 2z + 5
Is the function f (z) = continuous at z = i?
z−i
(9) Find all points of discontinuity of the following functions:
(a) f (z) = z22z−3
+2z+2
