Music Notation
What is Music Notation?
• Music notation is a system used to write down
music. • It tells us what notes to play, how long to play them, and how they sound. The Staff – Lines and Spaces • The staff has 5 lines and 4 spaces • Notes can be written on a line or in a space • The lines and spaces are counted from thee bottom up The Clefs – Treble and Bass • Treble clef (G clef): Used for higher sounds (e.g., violin, flute, right hand on piano)
• Bass clef (F clef): Used for lower sounds (e.g.,
cello, tuba, left hand on piano) Line and Space Notes – Treble Clef
• Notes on the lines (from bottom to top): E - G - B -
D – F /MI–SOL-SI-RE-FA
• Notes in the spaces: F - A - C – E/ FA-LA-DO-MI
Line and Space Notes – Bass Clef
• Notes on the lines: G - B - D - F – A/ SOL-SI-RE-FA-
LA • Notes in the spaces: A - C - E – G/ LA-DO-MI-SOL Note Positions on the Staff
• Each line and space represents a different pitch
• The note's position (line or space) tells you what note it is. • The clef tells you how to name the note. Ledger Lines – Notes Beyond the Staff
• When notes go above or below the staff, we use
ledger lines. • Ledger lines are small extra lines added just for that note. Summary
• Music notation is based on lines and spaces
• The clef tells you how to read the notes. • The shape of the note tells you how long to hold it. • Learning to recognize notes by position is the first step in reading music.
