Introduction
1.3 General information about enabling and signaling circuits

1.3 General information about enabling and signaling circuits

Relay enabling circuits:

When a safety function is requested or a fault detected, the 3TK28 safety relays enter the safe
state. This means:
Relay enabling circuits with NO function OPEN
Relay enabling circuits with NC function CLOSE

Relay signaling circuits:

Relay signaling circuits always have NC functionality with 3TK28 devices.
Relay signaling circuits thus always operate inversely with respect to the relay enabling
circuits with NO functionality.

Solid-state signaling circuits:

Solid-state signaling circuits in 3TK28 safety relays signal the state of the enabling circuits (==>
functioning synchronously with the solid-state enabling circuits).
When a safety function is requested or a fault detected, the 3TK28 safety relays enter the safe
state. This means:
Solid-state signaling circuits switch to the inactive state.

2.1 General safety notes

Note
SIL 3 according to IEC 62061
PL e / Cat. 4 according to ISO 13849-1
The 3TK2810-0 safety relays are designed so that applications up to SIL 3 according to
IEC 62061 / PL e according to ISO 13849‑1 can be implemented.

WARNING
Hazardous voltage.
Can cause death, serious injury, or property damage.
Hazardous electrical voltage can cause electric shock, burns and damage.
• Turn off and lock out all power supplying the system and device before working on the
device.

WARNING
Loss of the safety functions due to missing function test.
Can cause death, serious injury, or property damage.
In accordance with RFU CNB/M/11.050, when using actuators such as 3SK1 output expansions,
contactors or relays in continuous operation in factory automation applications, a function test
interval (shutdown test) ≤ 1 year for SIL 2 according to IEC 62061 or PL d with Cat. 3 according
to ISO 13849 is required. A period ≤ 1 month for SIL 3 according to IEC 62061 or PL e with Cat. 3
or Cat. 4 according to ISO 13849 applies. Only then do the safety characteristic values apply.
Exception: A function test interval ≤ 1 year is also permissible for SIL3 applications in the
process industry (in accordance with IEC 61511), exclusively for low-demand use, due to a
significantly lower failure rate probability of the electromechanical components. This does not
apply to safety-related applications in accordance with the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC.
Function test procedure for actuators with contacts:
• Actuate the connected sensors.
• Check their effect on the safety relay and the downstream actuators*.
• Activate the safety relay via the connected sensors.
• Check their effect on the safety relay and the downstream actuators*.
• Defective devices must be replaced.
*Since the read-back time of the delayable output functions is retriggerable, the actuation
duration for switching on and off for the regular function test must be longer than the time set
in the "Switching time" parameter. Only in this way can it be ensured that the expected
switching state has also been set on the connected actuator.

3TK2810-0 standstill monitor

The standstill monitor is the central component for safety-related standstill monitoring.
The device is supplied with voltage and signals and the detected states are output via the
terminals on the device.
The device is parameterized via the potentiometers. The LEDs show operating states, fault
messages and diagnostics.
A standstill is detected without sensors by measuring the residual magnetization.

Functional principle of the 3TK2810-0 standstill monitor

A standstill is detected by measuring the voltage induced by residual magnetization of the
coasting motor through 3 terminals connected to the stator winding.
If the induction voltage approaches 0, this means motor standstill for the device and the
output relay is activated.
To enable adaptation of the device to the most varied types of motors and applications,
the voltage threshold Uan, below which the 3TK2810-0 detects standstill, can be set. The
duration for which Uan must be undershot to detect standstill definitively and enable the
output circuit can also be set (standstill time t). The device also detects wire breaks between
the measurement inputs L1 / L2 / L3. If a wire break is detected, the output relay goes into
the safe position (as it does when the motor is running). This state is stored and can be
cleared by briefly bridging terminals X2 - X3. Terminals X1 - X2 are used to connect the
feedback circuit of external contactors (NC contact). If the feedback circuit is not required,
terminals X1 - X2 must be bridged; otherwise a fault will be signaled.

Functions 4
4.1 Terminals and their functions

Supply voltage A1, A2

• Connection for the device supply.
• The voltage specifications on the nameplate of the device must be observed.
• Recommended fuse protection 2 A

Supply voltage A3, A4

• Connection for supplying the signaling outputs.
• 24 V DC (12...30 V) voltage for the semiconductor signaling outputs "ON" and "ERR".
This supply voltage is only necessary if the semiconductor signaling outputs are used.

Measurement inputs L1, L2, L3

The measurement inputs detect the voltage induced by residual magnetization of the coasting
motor at 3 terminals of the stator winding.
If the induction voltage approaches 0, this means motor standstill for the device.
The measurement inputs L1-L2-L3 must be connected directly to the windings of the motor
to be monitored for standstill (i.e. not via transformers, for example), so that continuous
monitoring of the windings and the supply cable for wire breakage is ensured.
The measurement inputs must not be disconnected by motor contactors, etc., otherwise wire
break faults will be triggered and no standstill detection is possible.
The cables between the measurement inputs and the motor must be routed separately or
shielded if possible to avoid interference coupling, otherwise the standstill monitor may not
detect a standstill. The shield can be connected to the motor.

Control terminals X1, X2, X3

Feedback circuit X1-X2: Use a floating contact here that provides appropriate isolation for the
level of maximum measurement input voltage (motor voltage).

Functions
4.1 Terminals and their functions

Reset X3-X2: For instance, if you control terminal X3 from a PLC via a coupling relay,
use a floating contact here that provides appropriate isolation for the level of maximum
measurement input voltage (motor voltage).

WARNING
Hazardous voltage
Can cause electric shock and burns.
The control terminals X1 / X2 / X3 are not galvanically isolated from the measurement inputs
L1 / L2 /L3.
For this reason only use floating contacts for the control terminals.

Output circuits (normally open contacts) 23, 24; 33, 34; 43, 44
The device has three potential-free output circuits, which are designed as normally open
contacts. If a standstill is detected by the device, the contacts are closed.

Output circuits (normally closed contacts) 11 / 12

The device has one potential-free output circuit, which is designed as normally closed contact.
It behaves exactly inversely to the other output circuits with normally open contacts (23, 24; 33,
34; 43, 44). If a standstill is detected by the device, the contact is opened.

Signaling output circuit (changeover contact) 51, 52, 54

The device has one potential-free signaling output circuit, which is designed as changeover
contact. Terminal 51 is the common root. If a standstill is detected by the device, contact 54 is
closed.

Signaling outputs 64 and 74

The semiconductor signal outputs 64 and 74 are designed, for example, for connection to a PLC
and not for use in safety-related functions.
They function as follows:
• The internal supply potential (approx. 24 V) is output via terminal 64 when a standstill is
detected.
• The internal supply potential (approx. 24 V) is output via terminal 74 if the device detected
a fault.

Operator control 7
7.1 Commissioning and settings

1 Preparation
• Motor at standstill
• Terminals L1-L2-L3 connected via motor windings
• Ensure connection of terminals X1-X2
• For DC motors or DC braking, also bridge X2-X3
• Setting of Uan to the lowest value (potentiometer at the left stop)
• Setting of t to minimum value (0.2 s) (potentiometer at the left stop)

2. Apply voltage at the correct level at A1-A2

⇒ After approx. 1 s the LEDs "DEVICE" and "OUT" light up green and the output circuits (normally
open contacts) are closed or the normally closed contact opens.
Likewise, the signaling output "64" switches on.
If the "OUT" LED lights up yellow, no standstill is detected. The reason for this can be injected
disturbance voltages on the lines to the measurement inputs. In this case, the lines must be
laid separately or shielded.
If the lines have been laid correctly and still no standstill is detected, the voltage threshold
must be set higher at the Uan potentiometer.

3. Start the motor

⇒ After the motor has started, LED "OUT" changes to yellow and output circuits (normally open
contacts) open, or the normally closed contacts close, signal output "64" switches off.
For DC motors, LED "SF" flashes after approx. 2 s with the fault message "Wire break / Offset
at L2" (flashing 2 times) and the signaling output "64" switches on.

4. Switch off motor (or DC braking), allow motor to coast down.

The number of revolutions of the motor at which the device detects standstill, i.e. the output
circuits are closed, can be set with the potentiometer Uan. In the case of irregular and slow run-
down, the delay time t may have to be set to larger values in order to avoid alternate switching
on and off. If this does not produce a satisfactory result, the value of the Uan potentiometer can
also be set somewhat higher to avoid this effect.
While time "t" is elapsing, the "OUT" LED flashes green.

Equipment Manual, 08/2023, A5E50307927002A/RS-AA/001 49
Operator control
7.1 Commissioning and settings

If the standstill release is only to take place at a very low number of revolutions of the motor,
the response threshold Uan must be set to the minimum. By increasing the standstill time
t, a possible alternate switching on and off of the output relays can then be avoided. By
increasing the time period until the output relays are released, it can also be achieved that,
depending on the run-down behavior of the motor, the safety relays are not switched until
the motor has come to an absolute standstill, especially in the case of motors that generate a
relatively low remanent voltage.
With slow run-down, the simultaneity fault (Simultaneity fault signal L2 / L3 (Page 59)) can
occur under certain circumstances if the voltage threshold Uan is only undershot slowly and
not within 2.5 s simultaneously by both measuring channels. A "1-phase" connection of the
measurement inputs (so that both measuring channels receive the same signals if possible)
or/and an increase in the voltage threshold Uan can provide a remedy here. If the ramp-down
time of the motor is low, standstill time t can be set to minimum (0.2 s). This can shorten the
machine cycle times in automatic plants.

Operator control
7.2 Operation on motors with switchable windings

7.2 Operation on motors with switchable windings

For motors with star-delta (wye-delta) changeover, direction reversal and pole-changing
functions, it must be ensured that the measurement input lines L1 - L2 - L3 of the standstill
monitor are always connected via the motor windings in order to detect standstill, as otherwise
the fault message "Wire break" prevents the output contacts from being enabled.
In the case of a 3-phase connection to a motor with star-delta (wye-delta) changeover, the
star (wye) contactor must be switched on, for example, after the motor has been switched
off, so that the connection of L1 - L2 - L3 via the motor windings is guaranteed.
If it is not possible or desirable to switch on the star contactor after the motor has been
switched off, the measurement inputs of the standstill monitor must be connected directly to
one of the motor windings in "1-phase circuit", i.e. terminals L2-L3 bridged to one end of the
winding and L1 to the other end of the same motor winding.
The same applies to motor connections with direction reversal or pole changing. If the motor
windings are switched over with a "3-phase" connection of the standstill monitor and the
resulting interruptions of the measuring circuit last longer than 2 s, the standstill monitor
detects a wire break fault. To prevent this fault from being stored when the changeovers are
completed, the fault storage should be deactivated by bridging the terminals X2-X3.

7.3 Operation with DC motors

7.3 Operation with DC motors

The standstill monitor can also be used to detect the standstill of DC motors if they generate a
remanent voltage when they run down. The measurement input terminals are connected in the
same way as for 1-phase AC motors.
However, since the remanent voltage here is generally a DC signal, the standstill monitor
constantly detects an offset or wire break fault during operation and run-down.
Therefore, in this case, the fault must be automatically acknowledged by bridging the
terminals X2-X3 so that the device can be used for this purpose.

7.4 Operation with frequency converter

7.4 Operation with frequency converter

A frequency converter generates an offset during braking (DC component). This can be detected
as a wire break and stored by the standstill monitor. The same operation also occurs during DC
braking.
The enabling circuits are only released when:
• Braking has ended, i.e. the standstill monitor no longer detects a DC component (-> motor
stopped) and control terminals X2 - X3 are bridged.
• Or a manual reset is performed via these terminals.
• If the 3TK2810 is used with a frequency converter, terminals X2 - X3 must be bridged or a
manual reset must be performed before a hot restart.
• Use of control terminals X1 / X2 / X3
• Feedback circuit X1-X2:
• Use a floating contact here that provides appropriate isolation for the level of maximum
measurement input voltage (motor voltage).
• Reset X3-X2:
For instance, if you control terminal X3 from a PLC via a coupling relay, use a floating
contact here that provides appropriate isolation for the level of maximum measurement
input voltage (motor voltage).

WARNING
Hazardous voltage
Can cause electric shock and burns.
The control terminals X1 / X2 / X3 are not galvanically isolated from the measurement inputs
L1 / L2 / L3.
For this reason only use floating contacts for the control terminals.

8.4.4 Fault in the feedback circuit X1-X2

A feedback circuit fault has been detected.
The device expects that the inputs X1-X2 are bridged when the output circuits (normally
open contacts) 23, 24; 33, 34; 43, 44 are switched off. If this is not the case, there is a
feedback circuit fault, e.g. due to a welded external contactor or a wire break in the feedback
circuit.
This fault must be acknowledged, i.e. even after the fault has been eliminated, the device
remains in the fault state until it has been acknowledged by bridging terminals X2-X3.

8.4.5 Simultaneity fault signal L2 / L3

A simultaneity fault has been detected between L2 and L3.
If the measured signals are different for more than 2.5 s (one channel > Uan, the other < Uan),
a simultaneity fault is reported.
If subsequently also the measurement channel, which had signals > Uan, now provides no
signals (measurement input voltage became < Uan), the simultaneity fault still remains and
the output enable remains blocked.
The simultaneity fault message is only reset when signals > Uan are again detected
simultaneously on both channels. If the measured signals of both channels then become
< Uan again (simultaneously), the output relays pick up again.

8.4.6 Fault on the potentiometer for the voltage threshold

An internal fault has been detected on the Uan potentiometer for the voltage threshold.
To correct the fault, set the desired detent position again. Make sure that the potentiometer
engages noticeably.
Then switch the supply voltage at A1-A2 off and on again. If the fault is still present after
switching off and on again, the device remains in the fault state and must be replaced.

8.4.7 Fault on the potentiometer for the time setting

An internal fault has been detected on the t potentiometer for the time setting.
To correct the fault, set the desired detent position again. Make sure that the potentiometer
engages noticeably.
Then switch the supply voltage at A1-A2 off and on again. If the fault is still present after
switching off and on again, the device remains in the fault state and must be replaced.

8.5 Procedure in the event of a fault

8.5 Procedure in the event of a fault

The device releases the output contacts although the motor is running ("OUT" LED lights up
green).
Reduce the voltage threshold Uan, if necessary to the minimum level. If the output is still enabled,
there is probably a wiring fault at the measurement inputs (e.g. short-circuit from device
terminals L2 / L3 to L1) or the motor supplies too low a remanent voltage. Check the
measurement inputs for correct wiring to the motor windings according to the connection
examples.

The device releases the output contacts too early (motor is not yet at a complete standstill).
Set voltage threshold Uan for standstill detection to lower values. If necessary, also set a longer
standstill time t (delay time for release).

Device does not release the output contacts even though the motor is at a complete standstill.
Evaluate the indications of the LED displays of the device:
1. If the "UH" LED lights up green, see point 2.
If the "UH" LED does not light up green, there is either undervoltage at A1-A2 or an internal
device fault. (Internal faults can occur due to undervoltage, welded output circuits, or in rare
cases, extreme external interference.) ⇒ Switch the auxiliary voltage off and on again. If this
does not eliminate the problem, even though the auxiliary voltage is at the correct level, the
device is defective and must be replaced.
2. Is LED "ERR" (red) flashing with fault code "Undervoltage at A1-A2" (1 x flashing)?
If no, see point 3.
If yes, the device has detected an undervoltage fault. ⇒ Apply auxiliary voltage at proper
level.
3. If the LED "OUT" is not flashing green, see point 4.
If the "OUT" LED flashes green, the standstill has been detected, but the delay time until
output enable (t) is still in progress:
⇒ Wait until ts has expired. If there is no output enable after 6 s at the latest, the
measurement input L1-L2- L3 probably receives occasional voltage peaks greater than the
set Uan (this should actually be indicated by sporadic brief yellow flashing of the LED).
⇒ Remedy: Set Uan higher; if necessary, eliminate interference on measurement input (use
shielded cable if necessary).
4. If the "OUT" LED lights up yellow, the voltage at the measurement input is greater than the
set Uan; see point 5.
If the LED "OUT" does not light up yellow (i.e. LED is/remains completely off), the standstill
of the motor has been detected (voltage at the measurement input is < Uan), but there is no
release of the output relays, because
a) a "Fault in the feedback circuit X1-X2“ (4 x flashing), or

b) a "Simultaneity fault signal L2/L3" (5 x flashing) has occurred; or one of the above faults
has been eliminated but not yet acknowledged by bridging the terminals X2 – X3.
⇒ Remedy:
- Close the feedback circuit
- Bridge terminals X2-X3 (fault storage canceled).
If a "Signal L2/L3 simultaneity fault" (5 x flashing) is still displayed, this can be cleared by
switching the auxiliary voltage off and on again.

Note
Resetting of this fault also occurs automatically when the motor restarts (if both measurement
inputs L2 and L3 simultaneously receive measured signals greater than Uan).
