Control and Coordination Class10

The document outlines the mechanisms of control and coordination in animals and plants, detailing the roles of the nervous and endocrine systems. It describes the structure of the human nervous system, including the brain's major parts, and explains hormonal coordination through various glands. Additionally, it highlights the importance of these systems in helping organisms respond to environmental changes and maintain proper body function.

Control and Coordination - Class 10 Science Notes

1. Control and Coordination in Animals:

- Controlled by the nervous system and endocrine system.

- Nervous System includes Brain, Spinal Cord, and Nerves.

- Neuron is the structural and functional unit.

- Reflex action: Immediate response to stimulus without thinking.

- Synapse: A gap between two neurons that transmits signals.

2. Human Nervous System:

- Central Nervous System: Brain and spinal cord.

- Brain has 3 major parts:

a. Forebrain - thinking, memory, sensory processing.

b. Midbrain - relays information.

c. Hindbrain - balance and coordination (cerebellum), involuntary actions (medulla).

3. Coordination in Plants:

- No nervous system, but respond to stimuli through growth and movement.

- Tropic Movements: Directional movements (e.g., phototropism, geotropism).

- Nastic Movements: Non-directional responses (e.g., touch-me-not leaves folding).

4. Hormonal Coordination in Animals:

- Hormones are chemical messengers secreted by endocrine glands.

- Major glands: Pituitary, Thyroid, Adrenal, Pancreas, etc.

- Functions:

a. Pituitary - master gland, controls other glands.

b. Thyroid - controls metabolism (thyroxine).

c. Adrenal - fight or flight (adrenaline).

d. Pancreas - regulates sugar (insulin and glucagon).

5. Importance of Control and Coordination:

- Helps organisms respond and adapt to changes in the environment.

- Ensures proper functioning of body systems.
