Grade 12: Functions & Inverses revision

Overview

Prioritise weak topics

Focus on the topics you do not understand that well or struggle with in exams, during your revision.
It may be tempting to concentrate on the sections you know very well but by covering topics you
are not too confident in you are more likely to have a much better overall understanding off all the
work that will be examined in the finals. If you are not sure what your weak topics are, ask your
teacher or look back at your previous tests/exams.
Aim to revise everything but spend more time on things you don't understand or know less well.

Caps breakdown for exams:

Functions and graphs (excluding cubic graphs) are about 35 marks in the final exam, which accounts
for roughly 23% of paper 1.

Key concepts
You must be able to sketch and interpret the following functions:
-Linear graphs
-Quadratic graphs
-Hyperbola
-Exponential graphs
-Logarithmic graphs

Inverses
Given the invertible function f(x), we determine the inverse f −1(x) by:
– replacing every x with y and y with x;
– making y the subject of the equation;
– expressing the new equation in function notation.
If we represent the function f and the inverse function f −1 graphically, the two graphs are reflected
about the line y = x.
The domain of the function is equal to the range of the inverse. The range of the function is equal to
the domain of the inverse.
• The inverse function of a straight line is also a straight line. Vertical and horizontal lines are
exceptions.
• The inverse of a parabola is not a function. However, we can limit the domain of the parabola so
that the inverse of the parabola is a function.
• The inverse of the exponential function f(x) = b^x,(b >0, b 6= 1) is the logarithmic function
f −1(x) = logb x.
Question 1
(DBE Maths P1, November 2014, Q5)

Given 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) = 𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑎𝑎 𝑥𝑥 where a>0. S(1/3; -1) is a point on graph f.

1.1 Prove that a=3. (2)

1.2 Write down the equation of h, the inverse of f, in the form y = ... (2)
1.3 If g(x)=- f (x) , determine the equation of g. (1)
1.4 Write down the domain of g. (1)
1.5 Determine the values of x for which f(x)≥-3. (3)
[9]

Question 2
(DBE Maths P1, November 2015, Q6.1)

The graphs of 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) = −2𝑥𝑥 2 + 18 and 𝑔𝑔(𝑥𝑥) = 𝑎𝑎𝑥𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑏𝑏𝑏 + 𝑐𝑐 are sketched. Points P and Q are the x-
intercepts of f. Points Q and R are the x-intercepts of g. T is the y-intercept of both graphs.
2.1 Write down the coordinates of T. (1)
2.2 Write down the coordinates of Q. (3)
2.3 Given that x=4.5 at S, determine the coordinates of R. (2)
2.4 Determine the value(s) of x for which g”(x)>0 (2)
[9]

NB (g”(x)<0…concave down, g”(x)=0…point of inflection, g”(x) >0….concave up)

Given the function f(x) then
f is concave up on an interval if all of the tangents to the curve are below the graph of f .

f is concave down on an interval if all of the tangents to the curve are above the graph of f.

Question 3
(DBE Maths P1, Jun/Jul 2015, Q5)

4
3.1 Determine the value of f(-2) (2)
3.2 Write down the equation of 𝑓𝑓 −1 (𝑥𝑥) in the form y= … (2)

3.3 Andrew has no idea how to draw the graph of 𝑓𝑓 . Explain to Andrew how he may use the graph
of f to draw the graph of 𝑓𝑓 −1 . (1)
3.4 Hence or otherwise sketch the graph of 𝑓𝑓 −1 . Clearly indicate ALL intercepts with the axes.
