ABU DHABI INDIAN SCHOOL BRANCH-1, AL WATHBA

GRADE: 10 Chemistry Worksheet

Chapter: 1 – Chemical Reactions

&Equations
Balance the Reactions and state the type of Reactions
1. Fe + H2O  Fe3O4 + H2
2. CO + H2  CH3OH
3. Pb + CuCl2  PbCl2 + Cu
4. CaCl2 + K3PO4  Ca3 (PO4)2 + KCl
5. KMnO4  K2MnO4 + MnO2 + O2

Write the Chemical Equation and Balance them. Use State Symbols
1. Aluminium Sulphate solution reacts with Sodium Hydroxide solution to form Aluminium
Hydroxide precipitate and Sodium Sulphate Solution.
2. Aluminium metal displaces Iron from Iron (III) oxide to form Aluminium oxide and Iron.
3. Potassium metal reacts with water to form Potassium Hydroxide solution and Hydrogen Gas.
Find the Substance oxidised, reduced, oxidising agent and reducing agent
1. MnO2 + Al  Al2O3 + Mn
2. CuO + 2HCl  CuCl2 + H2O
3. Na + O2  Na2O
4. Fe2O3 + CO  Fe + CO2

Following questions consist of two statements – Assertion (A) and Reason (R). Answer
these questions selecting the appropriate option given below:
(a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.

(b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
(c) A is true but R is false
(d) A is false but R is true.
1. Assertion (A) : Decomposition of vegetable matter into compost is an example of
exothermic reactions.
Reason (R) : Exothermic reaction are those reactions in which heat is evolved.
2. Assertion (A) : Brown fumes are produced when lead nitrate is heated.
Reason (R) : Nitrogen dioxide gas is produced as a by product due to the decomposition of
lead nitrate.
3. Assertion (A) : In a reaction of copper with oxygen, copper serves as a reducing agent.
Reason (R) : The substance which gains oxygen in a chemical reaction acts as a reducing
agent.
4. Assertion (A): When calcium carbonate is heated, it decomposes to give calcium oxide and
carbon dioxide.
Reason (R): The decomposition reaction takes place on application of heat, therefore, it is
an endothermic reaction.
Answer the following
1. Why is photosynthesis considered as an endothermic reaction?
2. What is the general name of the chemicals which are added to fat and oil containing foods to
prevent the development of rancidity?
3. a) A solution of MgSO4 is put into copper pot
b) A solution of CuSO4 is put into iron pot
c) A solution of MgSO4 is put into iron pot
Which of the pots get damaged? Why? What is this reaction called?
4. What happens when silver chloride is exposed to sunlight? Write the chemical equation.
Name the type of reaction. Give one use of one such reaction.
5. Which of the following are endothermic and exothermic reactions?
a. Burning of natural gas
b. Electrolysis of water
c. Respiration
d. Decomposition of vegetable matter into compost
e. Reaction between Zinc and Sulphuric acid
6. A Zinc plate is kept in blue coloured solution. On examining later, it was found the blue colour
of the solution is faded, after a few days, When the Zinc plate was taken out and observed, a
no. of holes noticed. State the reason and give chemical equation.
HOTS
1. A compound X is used for drinking has pH=7. Its acidified solution undergoes decomposition
in the presence of electricity to produce gases Y and Z. The volume of Y is double than Z.
Identify X, Y and Z. Write the Chemical reactions involved.
2. Bhawana took a pale green substance A in a test tube and heated it over the flame of a
burner. A brown-coloured residue B was formed along with the evolution of 2 gases with
burning smell of sulphur. Identify A and B. Write the chemical reaction involved.
3. A student took 2-3 g of a substance X in a glass beaker and poured water over it. He
observed bubbles along with hissing noise. The beaker becomes quite hot. Identify X. What
type of reaction is it?
4. A Metal Nitrate A on heating gives a yellowish brown metal oxide and brown gas B and a
colourless gas C. Aqueous solution A on reaction with KI forms a yellow precipitate of
compound D. Identify A, B, C and D. Identify the types of reaction.
5. A metal X exists in the form of fillings, attracted by magnet reacts with HCl to liberate Y.
Identify X and Y and write a balanced chemical equation.
