Questions
1 Briefly explain the following terms.
a) Normal Force
b) Tension Force
20 marks
c) Spring Force
(4 each)
d) Frictional Force
e) Gravitational Force

2 State Newton’s first, second and third laws. 6 marks

3 A worker pulls with a constant horizontal force of magnitude 40 N on a box 10 marks

with mass 40 kg resting on the flat, frictionless surface of a frozen lake. What
is the speed of the box after it has been pulled a distance of 0.36 m.

4 A counter attendant in a diner shoves a ketchup bottle with mass 0.2kg

along a smooth level lunch counter. The bottle leaves her hand with an
initial velocity of 2.8 m/s. As it slides, it slows down because of the
horizontal friction force exerted on it by the countertop. The bottle slides a
distance of 1m before coming to rest. What are the magnitude and
direction of the friction force acting on it?
10 marks

5 A 10kg object is being pulled horizontally with a force of 50N resulting in a

net acceleration of 4m/𝑠 2 . What is the coefficient of kinetic friction 10 marks
between the object and the surface?

6 A 10kg object on a horizontal surface µk= 0.2 is being pulled with a force of
50N at an angle 30 degrees below the horizontal. What is the magnitude of 10 marks
the acceleration of the object?

7 A 10kg object slides down a frictionless plane inclined 30 degrees above the
horizontal. What is the acceleration?

8 A 10kg object is at rest on a plane inclined 30 degrees above the horizontal.

a) What is the force of friction acting upon the object?
b) What is the coefficient of friction?

9 Define Conservation of Momentum.

10 A cannon resting on frictionless ice fires a projectile parallel to the surface.

The cannon recoils backward while the projectile moves forward. The
cannon and the projectile have masses mass of the cannon = 2000kg and
mass of the projectile= 100kg. If the projectile has speed Vp = 5 m/s, find
the speed of the cannon immediately after it has fired.
