Band 7 and Band 8 Sample Answers

Cue Card Topic Example: Describe a time when you helped someone
You should say:
 Who you helped
 How you helped them
 Why you helped them
 And explain how you felt about it
Band 7 Answer:
"Last year, I helped my neighbor, who is an elderly lady. She was struggling to carry
her groceries home from the nearby market. I noticed she was finding it quite
difficult to manage the heavy bags, so I offered to carry them for her. I walked with
her to her house, and she was really grateful. I helped her because I felt it was the
right thing to do, and I always try to support others in my community whenever
possible. I felt very happy and satisfied afterward, as it’s always fulfilling to assist
someone in need."
Why it's Band 7:
 Good fluency and coherence
 Adequate vocabulary
 Clear pronunciation but with occasional slips
Band 8 Answer:
"A few months ago, I had the opportunity to assist an elderly neighbor who was
struggling with her groceries. I noticed her at the local supermarket, attempting to
lift some heavy bags, and it was evident that she was having a tough time. Without
hesitation, I offered my help and carried her bags all the way to her house, which
was just around the corner. I helped her because, first of all, I believe it's essential
to be kind and considerate, especially toward the elderly, who may face challenges
that younger people might not even notice. Secondly, it was a small gesture that
took very little time but made a big difference to her day. I felt incredibly content
and uplifted afterward, knowing that I had made her life just a bit easier, even if
only for a moment."
Why it's Band 8:
 Fluent, with only rare hesitation
 Wide range of vocabulary and idiomatic expressions
 Complex sentences and excellent pronunciation
Additional Practice Cue Card Topics:
1. Describe a memorable holiday you had.
2. Describe an interesting conversation you had with someone.
3. Describe a piece of art (painting, sculpture) that you like.
Final Tips:
 Practice speaking on various topics daily.
 Record yourself to identify areas of improvement.
 Listen to sample answers to learn how to structure responses effectively.
