Strut
1) An ISA 100 100x6 is used as a strut in a truss. The length of the strut between the
intersections at each end is 3.5 m. Calculate the strength of the strut if.
i. It is connected by two bolts at each end. (fixed & hinged)
ii. It is connected by one bolt at each end.
iii. It is welded at each end.
2) Design a single angle discontinuous strut to carry a factored axial compressive load of 100
kN. The length of strut is 3.0 m between intersections. It is connected to 12 mm thick gusset
plate by at least two bolts. 20 mm diameter 4.6 grade bolts. Also design the end connection.
The grade of steel is E250.
3) Design discontinuous strut using a tubular section and square hollow section to carry a
factored axial compressive load of 100 kN. The length of strut is 3.0 m between
intersections. The grade of steel is E250.
4) Design a single angle discontinuous strut to carry a factored axial compressive load of 100
kN. The length of strut is 3.0 m between intersections. It is connected to 12 mm thick gusset
plate by side fillet weld. Also design the end connection. The grade of steel is E250.
5) Calculate the design load carrying capacity in compression of a discontinuous strut 3.5 m
long. (The centre to centre distance between the end connections) consisting of two
unequal ISA 100 70x8 with long legs connected and placed in the following
(i) Connection to the same side of a gusset by more than one bolt in each angle.
(ii) Connection to both sides of 8 mm thick gusset by two bolts. The grade of the
steel is E250.
Built-up Column
6) Design a built up column 10 m long, to carry factored axial load of1080 kN. The column is
restrained in position but not in direction at both ends. Provide double lacing system with
bolted/ welded connections. Assume steel of grade Fe410 and bolts of grade4.6.
(i) Design the column with two channels placed back-to back.
(ii) Design the column with two channels placed toe-to-toe.
7) Design a built up column 10 m long, to carry factored axial load of1080 kN. The column is
restrained in position but not in direction at both ends. Provide Battens system with welded
connections. Assume steel of grade Fe410 and bolts of grade4.6.
(ii) Design the column with two channels placed back-to back.
(iii) Design the column with two channels placed toe-to-toe.

Column Splice
8) An ISHB 250@536 N/m column carrying a factored axial load of 900 kN. The column ends of
machined. Design and draw detail of the splice connection. Use M16 bolts.
9) A column ISHB 300@576.8 N/m is to support a factored load of 900 kN. The column section
is to be spliced at a height of 2.5 m. Design the splice plate and connections using 4.6 grade
bolts. Use steel of grade Fe410.
10) An ISHB 300@618 N/m column has to be splice at a section. It is subjected to a factored
axial load of 500 kN, a factored BM of 30 kNm and a factored shear force of 100 kN.
Contacting ends are machined to provide full bearing.
a. Design the column splice plate and bolted connection using grade 4.6.
b. Design a butt weld for the column section.
c. Design HSFG bolts and revise the splice plate size if possible.
11) A stanchion ISHB 300@618 N/m in the lower storey of a building is to be jointed to a
stanchion ISHB 200 @ 392.4 N/m of the next upper storey. A load of 600 kN is to be
transferred from the top storey stanchion. Design the column splice. The column ends are
made flush. Use steel of grade E250 and bolts of grade 4.6.
