Hydro Questions

The document outlines the design requirements and calculations for various types of turbines including a Pelton wheel, Francis turbine, and Kaplan turbine, detailing parameters such as head, power output, efficiency, and velocities. It also includes a problem related to a conical draft tube, focusing on its dimensions and pressure conditions. Key calculations involve determining angles, diameters, and lengths necessary for optimal turbine performance.

A Pelton wheel is to be designed for a head of 60 m when running at 200 rpm.

The Pelton wheel

develops 95.6475 kW shaft power. The velocity of the buckets =0.45 times the velocity of the jet,
overall efficiency = 0.85 and co-efficient of the velocity is equal to 0.98.

Solution
A Francis turbine with an overall efficiency of 75% is required to produce 148.25 kW power. It is
working under a head of 7.62m. The peripheral velocity = 0.26 √2𝑔𝐻 and the radial velocity of flow
at inlet is 0.96√2𝑔𝐻. The wheel runs at 150 rpm and the hydraulic losses in the turbine are 22% of
the available energy. Assuming radial discharge, determine:
(a) The guide blade angle (b) The wheel vane angle at inlet
(c) Diameter of the wheel at inlet, and (d) Width of the wheel at inlet
A Kaplan turbine runner is to be designed to develop 9100 kW. The net available head is 5.6 m. If the
speed ratio = 2.09, flow ratio = 0.68, overall efficiency = 86% and the diameter of the hub is 1/3 the
diameter of the runner. Find the diameter of the runner, its speed and the specific speed of the turbine.
A conical draft tube having 2 m diameter at the top and pressure head of 7 m (vacuum) discharges
water at the outlet with a velocity of 1.2 m/sec at a rate of 25 m3/sec. If the atmospheric pressure head
is 10.3 m of water and the losses between the inlet and outlet of the draft tube are negligible,
determine the length of the draft tube immersed in water. Total length of the tube is 5 m.
