Session 1: Introduction & Getting Started with a Computer

Objective:

Familiarize students with the computer system, powering it on/off, and understanding the basic
parts of the screen (desktop, taskbar, etc.)

Topics to Cover:

1. Introduction to Computer Hardware (5-10 mins)

• What is a Desktop Computer and Laptop?

• Parts of a computer/Input and Output Device: Monitor, CPU(Central Processing Unit),


Keyboard, Mouse, Touchpad (Laptop), UPS (Uninterruptible power supply), etc.

• Power button location (Desktop vs Laptop)

2. Turning ON and OFF the Computer (10 mins)

• How to turn ON a computer

• Proper way to Shut down, Restart, and Sleep

• Laptop battery & charging tips

3. Basic Desktop Navigation (10 mins)

• What is the Desktop? (Icons, wallpaper)

• Mouse usage: left click, right click, double click

• Using the Touchpad (for laptop users)

• Actions Performed by Different Fingers on a Touchpad

4. Introduction to Taskbar (10 mins)

• Start Button

• Pinned applications

• System tray: time, battery, Wi-Fi, volume

5. Open & Close Applications (10 mins)

• Using the Start Menu to open apps like Notepad or Calculator

• Minimize, Maximize, and Close buttons

6. Practical Hands-on (15 mins)

• Ask students to:


Turn on their PC
Open Notepad
Minimize and Maximize it
Close the app
Shutdown their PC properly

Homework / Practice Task:

Ask students to:

• Turn on and off their PC at home (if available)

• Practice clicking and opening any one application

• Observe and write 3 icons present on their desktop

1. What is the function of the power button on a computer or laptop?
The power button is used to turn the computer or laptop ON and OFF.

2. Write the names of any 3 parts of a desktop computer.

CPU (Central Processing Unit)

3. What is the difference between Shutdown and Restart?


Shutdown completely turns off the computer.
Restart turns the computer off and then automatically turns it back on.

4. What is the desktop in a computer? Name any 2 icons you usually find there.
The desktop is the main screen that appears after the computer turns on.
Common icons: This PC, Recycle Bin

5. What is the use of the Start Button in the taskbar?


The Start Button opens the Start Menu, which lets you access programs, settings, files,
and shut down options.
6. Match the following:

7. How do you properly shut down a laptop or computer using the Start Menu?

• Wi-Fi icon – Shows internet connection status

9. Write 3 steps to open an application like Notepad on your computer.


Click on the Start Button
Type Notepad in the search box
Click on the Notepad app to open it

10. Practical Task – Observation:

a) Turn on your computer


The screen lights up, and the desktop appears after a few moments.

b) Open the Calculator app


Calculator window opens for use.

c) Minimize and then restore it


The calculator disappears to the taskbar when minimized and reappears when restored.

d) Close the Calculator


The calculator window closes completely.

e) Shut down your computer properly


The computer turns off safely after selecting Shut Down from the Start Menu.
