Lesson Title: USING THE COMPUTER


Competency: Demonstrate understanding on how to operate a computer

A. PRE-TEST
A. Instruction: The following are the procedures in opening the computer. Using number 1-5, arrange
the start up to the last procedure.
The desktop will then appear and in few seconds, the computer will be ready to use.
After a while the Windows logo will appear on the screen
Turn the CPU then the monitor on. The appearance of a blinking light is an indication that the
computer is booting.
Wait until the system has finished loading.
Plug the main cord and push the power button of the power supply

B.Instruction: The following are the procedures in Shutting down the computer. Using number 1-5,
arrange the start up to the last procedure.

1. Switch off the electricity.


2. Switch off the monitor.
Wait for the screen to turn blank.
3. Click on the 'Shut down' button.
Click on the 'Start' button.

B. CONCEPT NOTE

Using the computer not only requires operational skills. Sufficient awareness and constant practice regards to
the proper ways of using it is relevant for the computer to function.

❖ TIPS IN AVOIDING THE COMPUTER HAZARDS


Keep your computer away from any food, most especially liquid substances.
Wipe or clean the computer regularly including the working area
Place the computer far from other electrical appliances.
Consult a computer expert in case internal problems occur.

❖ OPENING THE COMPUTER


Plug the main cord and push the power button of the power supply.
Turn the CPU then the monitor on. The appearance of a blinking light is an indication that the computer
is booting.
Wait until the system has finished loading.
After a while the Windows logo will appear on the screen.
The desktop will then appear and in few seconds, the computer will be ready to use.

❖ OPENING PROGRAMS ON THE DESKTOP


A desktop is a place where the icons and the task bar are located. It occupies the entire screen and it is the
background initially seen after opening the Windows.

❖ STEPS IN OPENING A PROGRAM FROM THE START MENU


To open a program using the Start menu:
1. Click Start.
2. Click All Programs, and slide your mouse pointer until
you've selected the program you want to open (it turns blue).
3. Click to open the program you've selected. ( ...
4. To close a program, click the located at the top-right of
the window

❖ STEPS IN CLOSING A RUNNING PROGRAM

1.Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete and then Alt-T to open Task Manager's


Applications tab.
2.Press the down arrow, and then Shift-down arrow to select
all the programs listed in the window.
3.When they're all selected, press Alt-E, then Alt-F, and finally
x to close Task Manager.
