PREFACE
Hello, my dear knitting yarn!
Today I invite you to make an outstanding man called Mr. X. Some time ago, I told you about a deep-
water reading lover - angler fish Sam. It was reading and reading until it got stories about the famous
detective - Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle. These stories were so impressive that an elderly
wise octopus Mr. X decided to become the main character of these stories. And what do you think?
Every evening, on his way home after work he starts searching for something suspicious in very common
things or starts asking passers-by about everything. Everybody has got a little bit tired of him, but they
don’t look down at him as Mr. X’s eyes become bright and whatever it is, it is a good muscles and brain
training. When Mr. X is not occupied with his investigation, he becomes blue and starts inventing
diseases. He can’t stop bothering himself with thermometer and medical books. Let’s make Mr. X happy
and vivid. Let’s find him a hobby that he will like.

YOU WILL NEED
- to make the head, body and upper part of
the tentacles: any plain yarn, not very
stretchy, of the main color (MC).
I used Vita Brilliant Print (45% wool, 55%
acrylic; 380 m/100 g), approx.1.5 skein.

- to make the lower part of the tentacles

and eyelids it is necessary to use solid yarn
matching the MC.
I used Vita Brilliant (45% wool, 55% acrylic;
380 m/100 g), approx. 0.75 skein.

- to make suckers: a bit of fine yarn of white color.

You can use Embroidery thread or Iris yarn. Vita Pelican (100% mercerized cotton, 330 m/50 g) is very
good for these parts of the toy. You can also use fine acrylic yarn.
I used ANGORA GOLD (20 % wool, 80 % acrylic; 380 m/100 g)

- to make the eyes and pipe: embroidery yarn or

Iris yarn, or any other cotton yarn.
I used Vita Pelican yarn (100% mercerized
cotton, 330 m/50 g). You will just need leftovers
of this yarn. However, you can make these parts
with polymer clay.

- to make the cap a la Sherlock Holmes you can

try to find tweed yarn. My Mr. X preferred
Scottish Tweed by Troitsk Yarn (100% wool, 360
m/100 g). You will need just a leftover. The color
is very beautiful. However, I would not
recommend this very yarn. It was very difficult to work with this yarn. The fabric was always stretching,
the crochet hook was always clinging the yarn.

- 1.0-1.5 mm copper wire - approx. 4 m. You can buy this wire in a craft shop, but I suggest buying in an
electronic goods store. There you can buy a 3*1.5 cord. Before buying the cord, make sure that the wire
inside it is whole and does not consist of several thin wires. With a paper knife, remove the insulation.
The cable inside consists of three copper wire cords, so having bought just a meter of cord you will have
three meters of copper wire. I also suggest checking the cross section of the wire as new cables VVG
3*1.5 have recently appeared in shops. These new cables have a different cross section, which is 1.2-1.3
mm. This is very important!

- white fabric plaster or insulation tape.

- toy eyes or beads or semi beads to make eyes. You will need 2 items.
The size of the eyes is 12 mm (depends on the size of your toy).

- 20 cm of 5 mm leather cord or a ribbon to make ties of the cap.

5
- transparent glue (if you want to glue the eyes on instead of sewing them on).

TOOLS:
- 1.5 mm crochet hook (the size of the hook depends on the yarn you use). 1 mm crochet hook to
make the eyes and the pipe
- wire cutter
- scissors

ABBREVIATIONS
ch – chain
decr – decrease: 2 sc tog
Attention! In order to get thick even fabric without holes make decreases as it is shown in pictures
below (and do not just skip on stitch!) unless it is stated otherwise.

How to make decrease

tog - together
shift st – shift stitch: an additional sc in next st and only after that change the position of the marker.
FO – fasten off and weave in the end
sc – single crochet
sc blo - single crochet through back loop only
sc flo - single crochet through front loop only

Front sc - front single crochet

incr - increase: 2 sc in one st

Incr-front sc - 2 front sc in one st
3-st dec - decrease: 3 sc tog

6
3-st incr - 3 sc in one st
st - stitch
incr-dec - Attention! In order to avoid holes between the tentacles when joining them together you have
to do the following: draw up one more loop through the same place where you have just made a sc as
you are going to make another sc but do not crochet it. As a result, you have two sts on the hook. Then
draw up another loop through the st in the previous rnd of the other tentacle (the one you are going to
join the first tentacle to). As a result, you have 3 sts on the hook. Now you have to make a sc through
the all 3 sts. It looks like you have made increase and decrease at the same time and in the end you have
made only one sc
Sucker - make a sucker
RS – right side
WS – wrong side
MR – magic ring

7
LOWER PART OF THE TENTACLES, SUCKERS
Work with solid yarn with 1.5 mm crochet hook. Do not move the marker, unless it is stated otherwise!

1) make a MR, 8 sc into the ring (8)

2-3) sc in each st around (8)
You now have a tube with wrong side out.
Do not change the direction of work; continue crocheting with RS facing you.
4) 2 sc in each st around (16)
5) (1 sc, 2 sc in next st) * 8 (24)
From this point, continue making an octagon, not a circle.
6) (2 sc, 2 sc in next st) * 8 (32)
7) (3 sc, 2 sc in next st) * 8 (40)
Pay attention there is a hole in the middle of the item. This hole is made in Rnds 1-3. The second photo
shows the same item from WS

Continue working adding suckers. If by any reason you do not want to make suckers, just don’t join the
additional yarn, simply make sc instead of sucker.
Now you have to join the additional yarn to make suckers. Make suckers with white yarn. In the photos,
I used violet yarn to make the process clearer. It is also marked with a blue line. Before making the next
sc put white yarn onto the loops of the previous round. Insert the hook under the loops, yo with the
main yarn, draw up a loop, yo and draw it through the loop on the hook to make a sc. Thus, the white
yarn will be inside the sc. Attention! This additional yarn is not done and you can easily draw it back.

8
8) (4 sc, (sc + sucker) in next st) * 8 (48)
If you do not want to make suckers, make this round in the following way: (4 sc, 2 sc in next st) * 8 (48)
Make the sucker in the following way:
To facilitate work drop the main yarn from the hook making a big loop to prevent unweaving.
As in the previous round we made sc + sucker in one st (it’s an increase), then draw a loop of white yarn
from the same st where you have just made a sc (in the case, when you have to make just a sucker,
draw the additional yarn through the loops of the next st) and ch 2.

Thus, there are 2 sts on the hook, 6 sc in first ch. Do not make a ss into the first st.

At this step you can drop all the sts off the hook, yo with the
main yarn first, then yo with the additional yarn and draw a
loop through the first st. There are 3 sts on the hook.

9
Bring the main yarn behind the sucker and do all the sts on the hook with the main yarn. Make the next
sc as usual bringing the additional yarn inside the st.

This is how Rnd 8 looks like.

There are no suckers in Rnd 9. It

is not necessary to bring the
additional yarn through the rnd,
you can just leave it on WS. You
will take it in work in Rnd 12.
9) (sc, (3 sc in next st) * 3, sc, 2
sc in next st) * 8 (104)
10) (12 sc, 2 sc in next st) * 8
(112)
11) sc in each st around (112)

10
12) (10 sc, sucker, 2 sc, 2 sc in next st) * 8 (120)
If you don’t make suckers, follow these instructions:
12) (without suckers) (13 sc, 2 sc in next st) * 8 (120). The following rounds without suckers make in the
same way.
Bring the additional yarn on WS. You don’t need it
in this round.
13) (5 sc, skip 5 sts, sc in next st (fold the corner
to WS), 5 sc) * 8 (80)
