EXPERIMENT NO. 5
OBJECTIVE: The activity aims to introduce students to the procedure of determining the
grading or particle size distribution of materials proposed for use as aggregates or being used
as aggregates.
APPARATUS:
1. Set of standard sieves
2. Pan or Tin Cans
3. Balance
4. Oven
5. Mechanical Shaker
6. Brush
7. Scoop
PROCEDURE:
A. COARSE AGGREGATE
1. Obtain proper weight of oven-dry sample from experiment no.3.
2. Make sure that the set of sieves that you will use is clean and dry.
3. Arrange the sieves with decreasing meshed openings from sieve no.3/8 at the top and
sieve no.200 at the bottom; place a cover at 3/8 size of sieve and a pan at the bottom
of sieve no.200.
4. Put the oven-dry sample at 3/8 sieve and pass the weighted sample through the nested
set of sieves.
5. Weigh samples retained in each sieve.
6. Calculate the cumulative percentage passing in each sieve based on the oven-dry
weight of original sample.
7. Plot the grain size curves percent finer of fine aggregates on a semi-logarithmic paper.
B. FINE AGGREGATE

DISCUSSION:
The sieve examination revealed a distinct distribution of particle sizes in both
coarse and fine aggregates. The majority of the particles in the coarse aggregate
were trapped on the 3/8-inch sieve (535 g), with only a little portion passing
through the finer sieves. This reveals that the sample is primarily composed of
bigger particles, while the presence of 16 g held on the No. 8 sieve (2.36 mm)
and 18 g flowing through suggests a modest proportion of finer particles. These
results indicate a pretty clean coarse aggregate with little particles.
