3. (a) (i) Amina has a flag with blue-green (cyan) paints which she wants to make a pure
green. As a form four student help Amina which should be added to the paint to
make pure green? Hence explain the reasons of your answer.
(ii) When a slide projector is used the slide must be put upside down and the image is
magnified laterally as well as vertically.” Explain this statement.
(b) A simple microscope with a focal length of 5cm is used to read the division of scale
1.5mm in size. How large will the size of the divisions be as seen through the simple
microscope?
4. (a) Triangle law of vector addition is appropriate when adding two vectors. As a form
four student explain with the aid of diagram how can it be achieved?
(b) An airplane is flying east at 200km/h its velocity relative to the air. While a 100km/h
wind is blowing 45o northeast, what is the velocity of the airplane according to an
observer on the ground?
5. (a) A trolley moving at a uniform speed on a horizontal bench slows down when a lump
of plaslicine dropped vertically sticks to it. As physicist explain to your friend why
trolley slows down.
(b) A uniform rod 1m long of weight 0.5N is supported horizontally on two knife edges
placed 10cm from its ends. What will be the reactions at these supports when a
weight of 1N is suspended 10cm from the midpoint of the rod?

6. (a) Anomalous expansion of water is said to have both useful and unuseful. Using the
knowledge of anomalous expansion of water justify the statement above using one
point in each case.
(b) The count rate recorded by a Geiger Muller tube (GM) and counter close to an
alpha particles source is 400 per minutes after allowing for the background count.
If the half-life of the source is 4 days:
(i) What would be the count rate 12 days later?
(ii) Why should the rate be determined over periods of several minutes rather than
over a few seconds?
7. (a) (i) If a pulley system is 100% efficient, its mechanical advantage is numerically
equal to its velocity ratio. However the efficiency of a pulley system is always
less that 100%. Explain with two reasons why so.
(ii) Draw an ideal pulley system with a velocity ratio of 4.
(b) A certain first class lever of length 2.5m has a velocity ratio of 12 and efficiency of
85%.
(i) How far from the fulcrum is the effort applied?
(ii) What effort is required to lift a load weighing 75N?
8. (a) In 2023 Turkey experienced massive earthquake that led to catastrophic effect to
the country. As an educated person explain to uneducated people the possible
causes of that earthquake.
(b) A pipe closed at one end has a length of 10cm. If the velocity of sound in the air
of the pipe is 340m/s.
(i) Calculate the frequency of the 5th overtone.
(ii) Give one reason why the frequency of the fundamental may alter during
the day.

9. (a) Explain the following phenomena as applied in physics field.
(i) A bat can fly in the dark during the night without hitting an obstacle.
(ii) Why it is not advisable for soldiers to March across a bridge in rhythm.
(b) (i) What is the ratio of the number of turns required to match an 80
source to the 320 load?
(ii) In the diagram XY is a straight conductor carrying current in the
direction marked by an arrow. The conductor is held vertical by passing
it through a horizontal cardboard sheet.

10. (a) (i) Assume you are an electrical technician in a certain place asked to
identify the problem of short circuit in a given school. How would you
identify the problem?
(ii) A laboratory technician wanted to use 3 resistor to verify ohm’s law,
but in a school laboratory there were only resistors of 2. Show
diagrammatically how 3 resistor could be designed using those 2
resistors.
(b) The terminal P.d of a battery is 12V when an external resistance of 20 is connected
and 13.5V when an external resistance of 45 is connected. Calculate the e.m.f and
the internal resistance of the battery.
11. (a) (i) You’re a manager in Electronic Company during the designing of electronic
circuit all technicians in your company request npn transistor. Explain why
most transistors are npn?
(ii) Briefly explain why are some semiconductors called P-type and other N-type?
(b) (i) Describe the construction and mode of action of the PN junction semiconductor
(ii) Form four students participate in group discussion, some members are
misleading the vertical (Y) deflection and horizontal (X) deflection. As a group
leader make clarification on how these two aspects differ.
